JUST DONALD AND ME…..

It was a Donald night last night!

I stopped into Don’s Place. I knew Don would be there. Wednesday is his golf day. He follows the game up with time at the bar.

Don and David were chatting. I joined them. One of the items discussed was bocce. This evening is league night. We are playing a team that has won only one game. Hopefully, we will win three. You never know, however. Bocce can be like the recent college basketball season.

Our team is in 4th place. Not bad. There are 14 teams. Fourth place is where we have been the past couple of years. Better than last place or way down in the rankings as we used to be.

The team won all 3 games last week. Without me. I could not make it. Perhaps I should stay away more often.

I said my good byes. Told Don and David I was off to the Chart Room. Don decided to join me.

As interesting as the Chart Room can be, it was more so last night with the presence of Don. He chatted away with Emily, met Peter. We  met Mary from Chicago. In Key West on vacation. She visits frequently. Knows Key West well.

Chicago Mary had been to Don’s Place before. We were returning there. She asked to join us. I took her in my car.

We chatted some more at Don’s Place. It was time for me to leave. Mary asked for a ride to Willy T’s on Duval. A tourist place. Across from La Trattoria. I drove her over.

I was home in bed early.

My morning began with a manicure. With Tammy at Lee Nails, of course. Tammy is the personification of Asian beauty. It is always a pleasure to be with her.

Then to Lisa’s. I am still bonding with Jake.

Lisa had taken Jake to the Vet’s for the first time earlier in the morning. She said he was very swell behaved. The Vet told Lisa that Jake is as big as he is going to get. He is a terrier mix of sorts. Stands about 15 inches tall and weighs 9.5 pounds. One year old.

It was a beautiful day. I have become pale. I do not spend enough time outside. I put the top down and drove US 1 to Sugarloaf and back. My sun lamp. Thirty minutes. It did some good. My cheeks are rosy red this morning.

I spent a couple of hours at home working on friday’s TV/internet show. The Key West Lou Legal Hour. Some interesting material has been accumulated. I will be speaking on the Iraqi War and its effect on the national debt, the Cyprus situation, the shame of Congress regarding its failure to entertain the assault weapons ban, a money strapped city that required male employees to bring their own toilet paper to work, the Gutenberg bible, a 1349 massacre of Jews, the early New York Yankees, and more.

All of a sudden, I was tired. I plopped on the bed and slept for 2 hours.

Sloan arrived. We worked on perfecting the blog talk radio show.

Emily told me last night another cold front was coming in today. Not a bad one, however. It is here this morning. It is a bit chilly. The high today will only be 73. Cool for us. Warm for you folks up north. I am not complaining. Merely sharing information.

The Florida keys are experiencing a manatee problem. Better stated, the manatees are experiencing a problem. An algae has developed out in the ocean that is not healthy for the manatees. Over 100 have died so far. I feel bad. I am sure most others in the keys do also. Manatees are big friendly hulks. Loved by all.

When I have bocce, I go out for lunch. Bocce starts early so I do not have time for dinner. Today my thought is Hogfish.

LIFE FRUSTRATING ON OCCASION

A life frustration hit me squarely between the eyes last night!

I did my blog talk radio show at 9. Immediately thereafter, the phone calls and e mails started coming in….. Where were you?….. I could hear nothing!

That is the way it goes! I do not know what happened.

To compound the situation, people were also advising me they could hear the archived version which is published immediately following the show.

Tell me why!

Visited with Lisa in the morning. Spent some time bonding with Jake. Apparently I needed it. I thought we were friends. When I walked in yesterday, Jake started barking like I was the enemy.

Jake got out of captivity. Lisa’s rear yard is fenced in. Somehow Jake got out into the front yard. Fortunately, the front yard is also fenced in.

Jake has come king pin in the Malcolm household!

Key West weather the past few days has not been very good. On the sucky side. This morning brings a change. It is magnificent outside! Blue sky. No clouds. Bright sun. Comfortable temperature. I suspect we are on the way to an 80 degree day.

The mighty fall! The mighty have been falling all year in college basketball.

Last night it was Kentucky’s turn. Kentucky did not make the NCAA tournament. The team was not considered good enough this year. An insult since Kentucky won it all last year and was ranked #1 nationally.

Second class teams get invited to the NIT. Kentucky was so invited this year. They were seeded #1. First round games were last night. Mighty Kentucky lost to pipsqueak Robert Morris. Insult upon insult!

SLOPPY JOE’S

I did the unusual last night. I went to Sloppy Joe’s. A rarity for me.

The place was packed. The music blaring and good.

I ate bad. Sloppy fries. French fries covered with ground beef, tomato sauce and melted cheese. To die for!

It was the end of an era. I noticed no one was smoking. No ash trays on the tables. Sloppy’s has permitted smoking for 85 some odd years. It is against Florida law for any establishment that sells food to permit smoking. Sloppy Joe’s got away with it for many years. The only Key West food serving establishment that has.

I attribute the freedom to the fact that Sloppy Joe’s was and is Key West history personified.

One wall has pictures of Ernest Hemingway. One big one. All I could think was that Hemingway was looking out and saying…..What the hell is going on!

The waitress told me no smoking was 3 weeks old. The law said stop!

My day was spent running errands. Walgreens, Home Depot and Publix. Stopped at Lisa’s afterwards. Wanted to see the new family member Jake. He has it made!

Lisa constantly mothers him. The grandkids love him. While I was there, he was outside in the back yard. Chasing 2 inch geckos. They were too fast for  him. But he kept up the pursuit!

I lunched at Blossoms. My whole day was spent eating not so healthy food. I enjoyed a Cuban cheese toast with tomato and a cup of Cuban coffee. The Cuban toast dripped with hot butter. So good! Bad food from a health perspective, however.

My first stop last night was the Chart Room. At first it was just me and Mary. Then they started coming in. Including Peter. Peter and I had our usual enjoyable conversation. We are two old guys. We were into medical problems last night like colonoscopies, prostrate problems and the like.

Bridget came in. New to me. I had never seen her before. Though she has been to Key West before. She is a tour guide. A special tour guide. She travels with groups of 30-40. High end type people. She and the group are staying at the Hyatt.

Bridget has an interesting job. She does not solely do Key West. She travels to all sorts of interesting places. Like London and Australia.

Bridget has an even more interesting background. As we all seem to do. She is originally off a 175 acre Maine farm. Then a farm in New Hampshire. Now a world travel guide.

I enjoyed Bridget’s company. I hope we run in to each other again.

I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO TITLE TODAY

My Sunday was quiet and uneventful. An item in this morning’s news disturbing.

The big thing yesterday were the March Madness seedings. Syracuse is a #4 seed. I thought it would be. Hoped for a #3. Four however is good enough.

I woke this morning to the news that the euro bank was planning on levying/taxing Cyprus bank accounts. Savings accounts. What shit!

The Cyprus legislature has to approve the plan today. If not approved, it’s bankruptcy for Cyprus.

A dilemma!

The worst thing European nations did was enter into the euro more than a decade ago. Greed motivated each country. The Germans were smarter than everyone else. Most other nations, such as Cyprus, are getting beat up.

Can you imagine waking up one morning to the news that your savings account was having 6-12 per cent taken out to pay back in effect monies owed Germany?

The run on Cyprus banks has begun. Too late, however. The ATM machines are empty and the banks are withholding withdrawals till things get figured out.

I felt a similar panic when I was on Greece’s Santorini island last summer. The euro problem was all the people were talking about. The Greek people. That and they hated Germany’s Merkel. It was rumored that all Santorini banking was going to close down.

Santorini is a large island. Tremendously larger than Key West. Only two ATM machines on the island.

When I heard the news, I thought I should replenish my euro cash supply. Not everyone in Greece took credit cards. Euros were needed. I walked the mile to the ATM machine near me. It was out of money.

The only other ATM machine was located on the other side of the island. A two bus trip each way. Fortunately, that ATM had money in it.

The crisis swiftly ended. Twenty four hours later, there was cash in the ATM near me.

Merkel is being blamed for Cyprus’ present crisis.

When something like this occurs, a madness sweeps in. A collective madness. Germany keeps pushing the envelope. I said it last summer and I say it again. The next war may start in Europe rather than the Middle East. If it does, it will be because of the euro and Germany pushing its neighbors for repayment.

I felt under the weather yesterday. My stomach was off. Other than a stop at the Plantation Coffee House, I spent the day home lounging around.

I feel fine this morning.

HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY!

The day has arrived! St. Patrick’s Day! Celebrated throughout the USA.

In most communities, it is a one day event. Not in Key West. Forty eight hours! All day Saturday and all day Sunday.

I took a walk down Duval in mid afternoon yesterday. Everything and everyone green! Even some dogs! Everyone happy! Doing the Duval Crawl.

Syracuse basketball has been a strain on my heart this season. For real. So many ups and downs. Never consistent.

Last night was the Big East championship game. Against Louisville. Syracuse had a 16 point lead. Syracuse lost by 17 points. What a turn around!

The final score was 78-61.

Syracuse’s dynamite offense crumbled before Georgetown’s zone defense and Louisville’s full court press.

The seeds for the big tournament will be announced tonight. I suspect Syracuse will be a #5 seed. Maybe a #4. Louisville will be a #1 seed definitely!

Sloan and I worked together in the late morning. She showed me last month’s stats for this blog. It was viewed in 49 countries. The largest number yet. It is heavily read in the United States and Canada. Panama, Finland and Malaysia reflected a significant increase in readers.

My evening started at Don’s Place. Chatted with Don and David. Hershel and Erika there, also. They were both wearing large straw hats and green all over. They were in fine humor. They had just completed the Duval Crawl.

Next the Chart Room. JJ, Sheila and Che. Sat next to Sheila. Had a long talk with her. A lovely person inside and out. After Sheila left, Che and I chatted.

A police officer from Valley Forge, Pa. was sitting next to us. He is a 2-3 time a year visitor to Key West. He was waiting for his wife who was in their room in the Pier House getting ready for their second Duval Crawl of the day. God bless them!

Made it to the Big Ten Sports Pub for the 8:30 start of the Syracuse/Louisville game. Syracuse looked terrific in the first half. Then it was over. Decimated in the second half.

While I was watching the game, Che showed up. His first time in the Sports Pub, I believe. He came to watch the game with me.

My on the road time yesterday started at 4:30 in the afternoon. I did not return home till  just after midnight. A long time for me. I was tired!

THERE IS JOY IN MUDVILLE…..

Although relative to baseball, the line can be applied to any sport. There is joy in Mudville! There is joy for Syracuse fans world wide! Syracuse beat Georgetown last night 58-55.

We came back!

Tonight Louisville for the Big East Tournament championship. Another great game awaits!

I watched last night’s game with my friend Andrew at the Big Ten Sports Pub. Andew is my neighbor. He owns the MTV home across the water. He was supposed to be in Thailand. He telephoned me to say hello, I am here, let’s have dinner tonight. A business matter required a quick return to Key West. He left wife Jas and son Kai in Thailand. In a few days, Jas and Kai will be in Sweden with Jas’ mother. Thereafter, Key West.

This is St. Patrick’s Day weekend. Actually, tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day. I love corned beef and cabbage. Once a year. Today or tomorrow is the time.

My mother made corned beef and cabbage frequently. It tasted better back then. Whatever my mother did. Plus, the meat was extra fatty which contributed to the great flavor. I do not recognize that taste anymore.

Schooner Wharf is big on corned beef and cabbage this holiday. They cook it special. I may stop to enjoy the meal.

The Key West Lou Legal Hour aired yesterday morning. Love doing it! Post show comments indicated the bank issue hit home. People understood. The thrust of the topic was that the same banks that were too big to fail several years ago, are now too big to prosecute. The shame of it all.

After the show, I went over to the Plantation Coffee House. Read the newspapers and enjoyed a cup of coffee.

The deadline for my KONK Life column is The article was entitled: New Pope and U.S. Catholic Social Issues…..Resolutions? I mentioned at length that I thought the new Pope was more inclined to deal with basic issues affecting the poor rather than the social issues confronting the U.S. Things like priests marrying, a woman eligible to be Pope, birth control, same sex marriage, pedophilia, etc.

The BBC this morning quoted Pope Francis as saying yesterday that he wanted “…a poor Church for the poor…I would like a Church that is poor working for the poor.”

I am sorry to say I called it correctly. I think it is time to deal with all issues. The Catholic Church has been floundering too long.

I published the KONK Life article to Amazon Kindle, also.

Jake has been part of the family all of five days. He seems to be doing well. He loves Robert, Ally, Corey and Lisa. They love him. He is out car riding this morning and walking Duval. What a life! I told lisa…..no green beer for him!

I was speaking with my friend Anna yesterday. I was complaining about Key West’s cold front. It was 68 degrees at the time. She told me not to complain. It is cold and snowy in Italy. A new storm had come down from Siberia. Siberia? Just the mention of it gives me a cold chill!

NEW FAMILY MEMBER

This is sort of a birth announcement.

The family has a dog. Robert and Ally have adopted a terrier mix from the dog pound. His name is Juice. He is 9-12 months old. He came home with them last night.

Ally is excited. Off the wall excited. Loves animals. Always hugging dogs. Robert enthused, but no where as much as Ally.

Lisa tells me Juice made it OK through his first night. He even walked with the grandkids to school today.

I get to meet Juice later this morning. I am looking forward to it.

Spent my day time yesterday researching and writing.

Last night was my blog talk radio show. Tuesday Talk With Key West Lou.

The big topic was the hatred that exists regarding Obama.

It was followed up with a bank laundering scheme involving $200 trillion. The federal government caught the bank. The bank is HSBC. No formal indictment brought. The bank negotiated a good deal for itself with the government. A $1.9 billion fine and no charges or jail time for any bank official.

Another interesting topic involved a recent federal grant for a study. The grant was $1.5 million. The study is to determine why 75 per cent of lesbians are fat and gay men are not. There is a claimed concern for lesbian obesity.

Interesting topics. The Obama thing speaks for itself. The HSBC money laundering scheme presents more of the old. The banks that were too big to fail are apparently too big to prosecute. The lesbian obesity v. gay male study a waste of taxpayer dollars in a tight economy. In any economy, for that matter.

Such is life!

The Big East Tournament started yesterday at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Syracuse plays at 2 today against Seton Hall. A non-consequential game from my perspective. I shall not be watching. I do not have the time this afternoon.

How one’s world changes! For years, I would spend anywhere from 3 to 5 days in New York City attending the Big East Tournament. Rarely missed a year. The games, the partying, all big time! My new world involves none of that. For almost 10 years. The surprising thing is I do not miss it. Key West is my new life.

Yesterday, the dentist. Again. Hopefully for the last time. Everything appears to be A-OK. My fingers are crossed.

Visited Lisa for a bit.

Last night the Chart Room. Peter and me. Peter is an intelligent man. I enjoyed our conversation.

A couple was in from Muskegon, Michigan. Ann and Jim. Nice people. I chatted quite a bit with Ann. We are contemporaries age wise. We talked about the Catholic Church, birth control and related issues.

Jim has an interesting business. He makes prescription dirt. You read it correctly. Prescription dirt. He sells it to golf courses and athletic fields. I never knew there was such a thing. There is something new to learn every day.

Ann and Jim have been regular vacationers to Key West for 20 years. They obviously like Key West. In recent years, they have been staying at Papa’s Hideaway on Louisa Street. I never heard of it. Must check it out.

Clayton stopped in. Proprietor with his wife Valerie of Vinos. Vinos is on Duval Street. Right in the middle. A great wine bar. Friendly people. Use the bathroom if you stop in. The best in Key West!

The vote for a new Pope has started. Several hours ago. Italy is ahead of us time wise. Who will it be? I doubt another Italian or European. Could be an American or Canadian. In my opinion, the new Pope should be a man of color. Significant portions of Africa and Central/South America are Catholic. Practicing Catholics. Not Catholics in name only. Perhaps such a man can reignite the Catholic fervor that once existed.

YESTERDAY A BANQUET

Auntie Mame said…..Live! Life’s a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death!

I had a banquet day yesterday. No hell raising and drinking. I spent the day with family. Lisa, Corey and the grandkids.

I joined them at the new Oz movie.

Robert insisted he had to sit next to me. I was pleased.

The movie was not a remake of the old one. No Dorothy and no Somewhere Over the Rainbow. It kept touch with the old but was a new tale all together.

I did not enjoy the first part. Fell asleep. Robert had to wake me. The second half I have to admit was exciting.

The movie is done in 3D. I had only seen one 3D movie prior to yesterday. The House of Wax back in 1953. I was a senior in high school at the time. Today’s 3D is much better and far more advanced than what I saw back then. As it should be.

The movie I saw in 1953 starred Vincent Price, Frank Lovejoy, Phyllis Kirk and Carolyn Jones.

Charles Bronson had a part. He was Igor. Igor was comparable to the guy that ate flies in the Dracula movies. Charles Bronson was not Charles Bronson at the time. He had not yet achieved stardom. He was listed in the credits as Charles Buchinsky.

Carolyn Jones later achieved big time notoriety starring in TV’s The Addams Family which had a long television run.

Frank Lovejoy was a dramatic actor. Primarily a second banana, he did star in several movies.

I met Frank Lovejoy two days before he died. It was 1962. I was a young lawyer. Twenty seven. I was in New York City on business. It started to rain. I ducked into the Hotel Warwick to get out of the rain.

The Warwick was a hotel that theatrical people frequented.

The bar was small. I entered. Seated at the far end of the tinyl bar was Frank Lovejoy. I recognized him immediately. We sat and talked for an hour. A nice guy. Soft spoken.

I read in the newspaper three days later that Frank Lovejoy had died the night before of a heart attack.

It was ice cream time after the movie! Robert and Ally both wanted a Mr. Softee. A new place near the theater. Robert, Ally and I had cones of soft chocolate. Corey and Lisa wanted nothing.

Then it was back to Lisa’s for the day. We had done the one o’clock show. It was now around 3:30.  Read the Sunday newspapers, watched Tiger, and fell asleep while doing so.

Dinner was outstanding. As usual.

On the way home, I stopped at Publix. Needed food again. It is not that I eat that much. It is that I do not buy enough.

I pulled into a check out counter and was surprised. An old friend was waiting in front of me. Dottie. We had not seen each other in at least six months. I enjoyed talking with her.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

Friday again! Time for my TV/internet show. The Key West Lou Legal Hour. Ten this morning my time.

I was going to open with my thoughts on why many hate Obama. I have moved that topic to #2. The opening topic will involve International Women’s Day. Which is today.

Key West has a very limited need at best for such a holiday. Everyone is equal in Key West. A recent study named the four places in America where women earned more than men. Key West was one of them.

The celebration of the holiday in Europe and Asia is interesting. The history of the day likewise.

It was Hogfish for lunch yesterday. I was playing bocce in the evening. When I play, there is no time for dinner. I try to have a larger lunch than normal to compensate.

Debra was hosting. We have become friends. She has worked in television and radio. A very knowledgable person.

It was cool even at lunch time. Hogfish had their overhead heaters on.

Bocce!

First time I played this season. I did good and bad.

We lost the first game decisively. We were behind in the second 14-6. Ended up losing 16-14. We had a run! I believe I blew the opportunity to win with my first shot at the end. I threw an Alice. I was way short.

I left early. I do not know the result of the last game.

Frankie played. First time since his big time heart surgery. He was my partner in the second game.

Frankie is a bit thin. He could use another 20 pounds. He appeared energetic. I worried about him. He was chasing the balls, bending over to pick them up, blasting, and so forth. I told him I would do it. He did it for me back when I was having heart problems. Frankie said no. There was nothing I could do.

My dear friend Pati came over to say hello and chastise me. She is more my liberal than I. Way to the left. She disagreed with recent environmental comments I have made. She will be on me for the next month!

I am going to have a be good to Louis day. After the show, a manicure and pedicure with Tammy! I sometimes think I should have been a woman. Women’s bodies get better attention than a man’s.
