SYRACUSE, MY SYRACUSE!

I did not get home and to bed till one last night. Overslept this morning. Have the Key West Lou Legal Hour at 10. The blog will have to be quick.

Syracuse won last night! Beat Indiana 61-50. A sweet victory. I never expected it. On to Marquette saturday. Another tough game. Marquette beat Syracuse during the season 74-71.

I am starting to become a believer. Just maybe…..

Yesterday morning was  a haircut and beard trim with Lori. Spent the afternoon fine tuning today’s show. Ten this morning my time. The Key West Lou Legal Hour. Via television and the internet. Bocce last night. We lost all three. Close games, Nevertheless we lost. I played the first game with Frankie. We were losing 9-2. We came back. Still lost 16-15. I did not have the stellar performance as last week. My playing was back to normal.

Stopped at Sandy’s on White Street for a bite on the way to Don’s to watch the game. Enjoyed a Cuban cheese toast with tomato. I was sitting outside. A huge dog came over. I do not know what kind. Big and white with brown and black spots.

He looked at me with big sympathetic eyes. He was hungry. I shared have my sandwich with him. He stayed the whole time.

A police officer arrived. He came to eat. Saw my friend. Told me he had to take him to the pound. No collar or tag. I felt terrible.

I am going to check tomorrow to make sure his owner found him. It would be a crime to do away with him.

Don’s Place for the Syracuse/Indiana game. Don an Indiana fan. David watched with us. Dee came during the game and stayed a while.

Hershel and Erika, where were you? Both die hard Indiana fans. In the middle of bocce, they put on their Indiana sweat shirts to aggravate me. I would have enjoyed watching the game with them. And smiling big at them when Syracuse won!

BOCCE, BLUE ANGELS AND EUGENE ROBINSON

A spectacular bocce evening last night!

We won all three games. We played well. On top of which, I shot what has to have been the best bocce of my life! They were falling in for me. I could do no wrong.

Thank you, Lord!

Frankie and I were partners. He is recovering well from his heart surgery. Frankie mentioned in passing that five years ago he was in Rome, NY and played in the International Bocce Tournament . An annual event.  His team played a team from Italy. The team had been the overall winner the year before. Frankie said his team got killed! So bad that he could not wait to get out of Dodge the next day.

Rome is 15 miles from my home town of Utica. The bocce tournament is a big deal.

The Blue Angels arrived in Key West yesterday. The US Navy daredevils of the sky. They arrived by flying low the length of Duval Street. Then up the road to the Naval Base at Boca Chica. They will be performing this weekend.

My other bocce partner Erika is Controller at the Key West Citizen. The Citizen is one of the sponsors of the Blue Angels event. Tomorrow Erika will be flying in a two seater pursuit plane which will be overseeing the Blue Angels. Excited she is!

Once again Key West is blessed with the presence of a person of fame and reputation. Eugene Robinson. Pulitzer Prize winner, syndicated columnist, Associate Editor of the Washington Post, round table member of MSNBC’s Morning Joe, and whatever else. Robinson is speaking this evening at 6 at The Studios of Key West. The event is free and open to the public.

Robinson’s wife brings him to Key West. She is a painter. Her work has been showing all week at The Studios.

Another person of repute arrived in Key West yesterday. Terri White is back! With wife Donna Barnett. They are in Key West to celebrate Passover with family.

Terri and Donna refer to themselves as my lesbian wives. They are. I can’t wait to see them. They are not staying with me this visit. I have been abandoned.

Syracuse won its first tournament game last night. Beat Montana 81-34. Big! Syracuse plays California saturday. May Syracuse continue to be victorious!

I had intended to lunch yesterday at Hogfish. Never made it. Final preparations for today’s TV/internet show took more time than I expected.

JUST DONALD AND ME…..

It was a Donald night last night!

I stopped into Don’s Place. I knew Don would be there. Wednesday is his golf day. He follows the game up with time at the bar.

Don and David were chatting. I joined them. One of the items discussed was bocce. This evening is league night. We are playing a team that has won only one game. Hopefully, we will win three. You never know, however. Bocce can be like the recent college basketball season.

Our team is in 4th place. Not bad. There are 14 teams. Fourth place is where we have been the past couple of years. Better than last place or way down in the rankings as we used to be.

The team won all 3 games last week. Without me. I could not make it. Perhaps I should stay away more often.

I said my good byes. Told Don and David I was off to the Chart Room. Don decided to join me.

As interesting as the Chart Room can be, it was more so last night with the presence of Don. He chatted away with Emily, met Peter. We  met Mary from Chicago. In Key West on vacation. She visits frequently. Knows Key West well.

Chicago Mary had been to Don’s Place before. We were returning there. She asked to join us. I took her in my car.

We chatted some more at Don’s Place. It was time for me to leave. Mary asked for a ride to Willy T’s on Duval. A tourist place. Across from La Trattoria. I drove her over.

I was home in bed early.

My morning began with a manicure. With Tammy at Lee Nails, of course. Tammy is the personification of Asian beauty. It is always a pleasure to be with her.

Then to Lisa’s. I am still bonding with Jake.

Lisa had taken Jake to the Vet’s for the first time earlier in the morning. She said he was very swell behaved. The Vet told Lisa that Jake is as big as he is going to get. He is a terrier mix of sorts. Stands about 15 inches tall and weighs 9.5 pounds. One year old.

It was a beautiful day. I have become pale. I do not spend enough time outside. I put the top down and drove US 1 to Sugarloaf and back. My sun lamp. Thirty minutes. It did some good. My cheeks are rosy red this morning.

I spent a couple of hours at home working on friday’s TV/internet show. The Key West Lou Legal Hour. Some interesting material has been accumulated. I will be speaking on the Iraqi War and its effect on the national debt, the Cyprus situation, the shame of Congress regarding its failure to entertain the assault weapons ban, a money strapped city that required male employees to bring their own toilet paper to work, the Gutenberg bible, a 1349 massacre of Jews, the early New York Yankees, and more.

All of a sudden, I was tired. I plopped on the bed and slept for 2 hours.

Sloan arrived. We worked on perfecting the blog talk radio show.

Emily told me last night another cold front was coming in today. Not a bad one, however. It is here this morning. It is a bit chilly. The high today will only be 73. Cool for us. Warm for you folks up north. I am not complaining. Merely sharing information.

The Florida keys are experiencing a manatee problem. Better stated, the manatees are experiencing a problem. An algae has developed out in the ocean that is not healthy for the manatees. Over 100 have died so far. I feel bad. I am sure most others in the keys do also. Manatees are big friendly hulks. Loved by all.

When I have bocce, I go out for lunch. Bocce starts early so I do not have time for dinner. Today my thought is Hogfish.

TOO BIG TO PROSECUTE

Remember back several years ago when the recession began. The banks were primarily at fault. They were even in danger of going under. The U.S. government bailed them out with our tax dollars.

The American public was told that the banks were too big to fail.

Interestingly, to date not one bank official has been indicted for wrongdoing during that period.

HSBC is a world wide British bank. Many HSBC banks are located in the United States. There was a report this week of a money laundering scheme involving HSBC. Amongst other things, drug cartel monies from Mexico and Columbia were laundered through its U.S. banks. $200 trillion worth of money.

The Attorney General negotiated a deal with HSBC whereby the bank admitted its wrongdoing and paid a $1.9 billion fine. The $1.9 billion represented one month’s profit from the money laundering to the bank. The Attorney General took the position that the bank had cooperated in the investigation and that the investigation was too broad and complex for criminal charges to be brought. In other words, the bank was too big to prosecute.

Yesterday began with a haircut with Lori. It was cold walking from the parking lot to her shop. Key West is suffering another cold front.

Then quickly to Lisa’s. I was babysitting. Robert and Ally were off from school.

I spent a bit of time bonding with Jake. A cute, quiet, small terrier. He gets along with the grandkids. They love him. Especially Ally. Lisa is like a mother to Jake. One happy family!

Jake never barks. Or so I thought. Ally had him outside on the leash so he could go. In the front yard. The property is fenced. A large dog walked by. Jake went crazy. Barked big time and loud! Strained on the leash. Ally had all she  could do to hold him.

Apparently Jake is territorial. If another reason exists, let me know.

Robert and Ally wanted to lunch at I-HOP. It has been a while since we were there. We enjoyed a long talkative time. Robert at times seems profound. Ally talks of silly things. Poppa sat back and enjoyed.

Then it was back to Lisa’s. Ally took Jake out of the cage and immediately walked him for potty purposes. That is when the situation earlier described occurred.

I was behind in preparation for this morning’s show. I worked the balance of the afternoon and into last night getting ready. Never made it to bocce. Called Captain David and told him the team would have to win without me.

Syracuse and Georgetown this evening. The third time in a month. Seven o’clock. Madison Square Garden. The quarter finals of the Big East Tournament. A Syracuse victory would be nice. It is definitely needed to help Syracuse’s seeding in the Big Tournament beginning next week.

Must move on. Need to shower and get to the TV studio for this morning’s show.

TRAGEDY STRIKES HOME

One thinks a gun tragedy will not occur where they live. Not us…..who would shoot any one around here.

It happens!

It happened yesterday 15 miles from my hometown, Utica, NY.

Herkimer is a small village 15 miles east of Utica. I have many friends living in the Herkimer area. I tried many lawsuits in Supreme Court there.

Yesterday, four persons were shot and killed. The assailant is hold up in a deserted building in Herkimer.

What will never happen, happened.

Juice is no longer Juice. He is now Jake. The family decided to change his name.

I met Jake for the first time yesterday. A quiet little dog. A terrier mixed breed. He sniffed me. I petted him. Gave him a treat.

Robert and Ally were home. No school in the afternoon. They were all over Jake.

The person who appears most enamoured with Jake was Lisa. She is like a mother with a new baby.

Lisa just telephoned. Jake did bad. He pooped and peed in the house. Her words were very tolerant. Jake has it made!

We have a new Pope. I will discuss Pope Francis in my TV/internet show tomorrow morning.

He appears to be a good man. He also carries a negative from my perspective. He was and is a Jesuit. A tough, adamant, fearless order of priests. They are doctrinaire. I fear things like birth control will not change while Francis is Pope.

The fact the new Pop took the name Francis is significant. St. Francis of Assisi gave his fortune away. He then dedicated his life to helping the poor. Uplifting the poor I suspect will be Pope Francis’ legacy.

I spent the afternoon working on tomorrow’s show. No where near done yet. And I have a busy day before me. Haircut at 10 and babysitting at noon. I question whether I will make bocce tonight.

In addition to further comment re the new Pope, I will be discussing usury from the Catholic Church’s perspective. I had been planning the usury discussion all week. The election of a new Pope is coincidental.

The Chart Rooom first last night. Lovely Emily tending bar. Peter there, as usual. I was supposed to meet Gordon and Charles. No Gordon and Charles. Instead a business card saying they could not make it. Sad. Perhaps next week.

I chatted with two ladies at the bar. Betty and Carolyn. Enjoying Key West for a few days.

Betty is from Fort Myers, Carolyn Taverna. Betty is a retired dental hygenist with a husband back in Fort Myers. Carolyn single. However, she was quick to point out she has a dog.

Two lovely women. Enjoyed my time with them.

I had dinner at Tavern ‘N Town with Dee. I hit 30 pounds lost yesterday. Decided to celebrate. Enjoyed a prime rib. The scale this morning tells me I should not have.

It is Lori and me at 10 for a haircut. Then I am babysitting Robert and All for a couple of hours at noon.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

Friday again! Time for my TV/internet show. The Key West Lou Legal Hour. Ten this morning my time.

I was going to open with my thoughts on why many hate Obama. I have moved that topic to #2. The opening topic will involve International Women’s Day. Which is today.

Key West has a very limited need at best for such a holiday. Everyone is equal in Key West. A recent study named the four places in America where women earned more than men. Key West was one of them.

The celebration of the holiday in Europe and Asia is interesting. The history of the day likewise.

It was Hogfish for lunch yesterday. I was playing bocce in the evening. When I play, there is no time for dinner. I try to have a larger lunch than normal to compensate.

Debra was hosting. We have become friends. She has worked in television and radio. A very knowledgable person.

It was cool even at lunch time. Hogfish had their overhead heaters on.

Bocce!

First time I played this season. I did good and bad.

We lost the first game decisively. We were behind in the second 14-6. Ended up losing 16-14. We had a run! I believe I blew the opportunity to win with my first shot at the end. I threw an Alice. I was way short.

I left early. I do not know the result of the last game.

Frankie played. First time since his big time heart surgery. He was my partner in the second game.

Frankie is a bit thin. He could use another 20 pounds. He appeared energetic. I worried about him. He was chasing the balls, bending over to pick them up, blasting, and so forth. I told him I would do it. He did it for me back when I was having heart problems. Frankie said no. There was nothing I could do.

My dear friend Pati came over to say hello and chastise me. She is more my liberal than I. Way to the left. She disagreed with recent environmental comments I have made. She will be on me for the next month!

I am going to have a be good to Louis day. After the show, a manicure and pedicure with Tammy! I sometimes think I should have been a woman. Women’s bodies get better attention than a man’s.

BABE RUTH, JOE DI MAGGIO AND PAUL MC CARTNEY

An interesting and lively TV/internet show tomorrow morning. How can in not be if the topics include the likes of Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio and Paul McCartney!

The Key West Lou Legal Hour will start with my thoughts as to why many Americans dislike/hate President Obama. In addition to other topics previously mentioned this week, I will touch on Maryland being in the process of abolishing the death penalty, how a 1/4 ounce bat has stopped a major highway construction project, the IRS, first US Marine troops in Vietnam, and Italy’s Berlusconi being convicted yesterday of illegal publication of a wiretap.

Ten in the morning my time.

I spent the first part of my yesterday working on tomorrow’s show. I was tired afterwards. I lay down on the bed for a few minutes. Woke three hours later. Guess I was tired!

The Chart Room early last night. Around 5. Me, Peter, and Emily. I had time for one drink only. Syracuse basketball awaited.

I mentioned to Peter I saw a gigantic black helicopter with all kinds of guns set down at the Key West Airport the day before. Peter said he had seen several from his perch at Fort Zachery Taylor beach where he spends his days.

While the conversation was going on, I was leafing through the Key West Citizen. Low and behold, there was a picture of one of the helicopters and an accompanying short story. Marine helicopters. Six of them. In Key West for training exercises.

Peter mentioned that at the same time he saw the helicopters, there were what he thought were Navy Seals at the Fort Zach beach. Running up and down the beach doing early morning exercises. He also viewed many rubber rafts just off shore occupied by what he thought were Navy Seals.

I hurried over to the Big Ten Sports Pub. Syracuse and De Paul playing. The game was at 6. I have never watched a Syracuse game at that time. When the mighty fall, all sorts of embarassments are heaped upon them!

Syracuse easily won. About time. Three straight losses leading up to last night’s game. There is only one game left in the regular Big East season for Syracuse. Georgetown on saturday. A must win for Syracuse. To avenge the drubbing two weeks ago and place Syracuse in position for a better seeding in the big tournament to come. March Madness in two weeks!

It is spring break time. About a dozen Georgetown students came in to watch Georgetown play. Georgetown was playing at 7. Most were young ladies. They must have arrived yesterday. All were pale.

They were anxious for Syracuse to lose to De Paul and then to Georgetown again on saturday. They consider Syracuse Georgetown’s #1 rival. Correct they were. Syracuse considers Georgetown in a similar vein.

I stopped at Don’s Place on the way home.

For those of you who are Larry Smith fans, his Dad died yesterday. Larry and Christine are off to Pennsylvania this morning to be with family.

I am beginning to get tired of the cold weather. Another cold front came in around 2 in the afternoon. The temperature dropped in minutes from 75 to 65 degrees. Got down to 61 during the evening. I turned on the heat. Today will be in the mid 60s.

This type cold weather should have been experienced by Key West in December and January. It did not. March is supposed to be sunshine all the time.

Bocce tonight. The Weather Channel says it will be 60 degrees while we are playing. The bocce courts are situated 300 feet off the Atlantic. The cold ocean breeze will add a chill factor.

I know. I should not complain. No one is playing bocce up north.

COLD FRONT HITS KEY WEST

It started yesterday afternoon. A cold front came in. A damp one. It will be with us through monday. High 60s by day, very low 60s by night.

Get out the long johns!

The Key West Lou Legal Hour this morning. Great TV and internet viewing. Topics like Burlusconi saying Germany’s Merkel had a fat ass, the Oreo and Walmart, Bud Beer allegedly watered down, Exxon winning again in court, the Keystone Pipe Line, use and abuse of 911, a lawyer locked in jail, and more.

My yesterday began with a visit to Lori for a haircut. She trimmed my beard a bit, also. All five chairs in her beauty parlor were filled. Another sign Key West is experiencing a very good season.

Then to the dentist. For only a five minute adjustment. Or so I thought. I spent 1.5 hours in the chair. No pain. All mechanical. I have another appointment scheduled for tuesday. When will it end?

The diet ended a month ago. However, I have been watching what I eat. As a result, I have lost an additional  4-5 pounds. The effort has been to avoid fats. Blew it yesterday at lunch time!

I have been dying for a Cuban cheese toast with tomato. All that delicious melted butter. Cuban bread made from pork lard. What a marriage of ingredients!

I did it! Magnificent! It had been four months since my last one. If I am to maintain my present body shape, it will have to be four months before I have another.

Bocce last night. Turned into a weather disaster. The cold front moved in dramatically just as we were to start playing. It rained. Lightly, then heavy. You could see the water starting to pool on the clay courts.

The rain was cold. The dampness ate through to the bone. About 15 of us were huddled under a tree with room for five before the games were called.

Everyone went to Don’s Place. Where else? It is like a private club.

I was hungry. Did not eat prior to leaving for bocce. Decided on Hogfish. The rain had stopped.

Hogfish packed also. Another sign the season is upon us.

I grapped a newspaper and sat at the corner of the bar. The lobster bisque is the best. I ordered a bowl to warm up. It was lobster night for me. I followed the bisque up with a lobster roll.

I knew no one. I spoke with no one. I was content with the newspaper.

OUTBACK RIP OFF

I generally eat at Outback once a week. I have always considered Outback good food at a good price. Last night I discovered the food is still good. However, the price is not. Outback has raised  prices regarding certain items. Perhaps deviously.

I generally order a prime rib. The middle priced cut. Like $16.95. Two vegetables or sides came with it at no additional charge. I always ordered steamed vegetables and a baked potato.

Last night, the steamed veggies and potato cost me an extra $7.95. An $8 increase basically. I was required to order them seperately. What previously had cost $16.95 was now $25. A thirty per cent jump in one shot.

Outback had a new menu. Items had been moved around. I discovered the change/increase before ordering. Was I to beat on the young waitress? I ordered and paid. However Outback has lost me as a regular customer.

Previous to Outback, I had been at Don’s Place and the Chart Room.

The remnants of Wednesday golf were still at Don’s. Don, Tom and Boomer. Hershel, also. We chatted. Bocce primarily. Bocce season is upon us once more. We play tonight. It will be my first time in the new season. I missed last week because of the grandkids and Wizard of Oz.

The Chart Room walls were splitting. So many people! No question. It is the height of the season.

I talked with Peter and Emily.

I spent the afternoon writing next week’s KONK Life column. The Resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. Written from my perspective. Suggesting the whys involved. My premise was to the effect that the Catholic Church is presently facing its own hell.

Sequester/sequestration is all over the news. When does it actually go into effect? Today at midnight? Tomorrow at midnight?

Neither.

I researched the question. Turns out the answer is two pronged. It involves the President signing and a fixed time for his signature.

Sequestration goes into effect when the President signs a document so stating. The President is required by law to sign the document no later than 11:59 friday evening.

Interesting.

The Republican and Democratic leaders are meeting with the President tomorrow during the day. Last minute again. Even if they agree to something, I assume it will have to be approved by the House of Representatives and the Senate. Can’t be done prior to 11:59 friday night. Most of them are not in Washington. They are home. Our legislators only work three days a week. Tuesday through thursday.

A contemporary died yesterday. Van Cliburn. He was 78. I am 77.

No one had heard of Van Cliburn till he won the 1958 Moscow Competition for concert pianists. He was 23 at the time. A big deal winning. The U.S. and Russia were at each other’s throats. It was surprising an American won.

Van Cliburn received a ticker tape parade up Broadway when he returned home to the United States. Though his modus operandi was conservative piano playing, he acquired rock star status world wide.

I sometimes think I am losing it mentally. In yesterday’s blog, I said Syracuse was playing Connecticut last night. Syracuse did not play Connecticut. They did not play anyone. There was no game scheduled.

Tomorrow the Key West Lou Legal Hour. My TV/internet show. Ten in the morning my time. Join me. As usual, it will be terrific. Such modesty! But it is good!

Another crazy week. I shall be hitting on sequestration and the Pope, of course. Plus the hot air balloon accident in Egypt, Michelle Obama, the results of the Italian election, the Walmart employee who ate one bag of Oreos and has been charged with a felony, E. Howard Hunt’s death bed confession, the claim Budweiser being watered down, and more.

A PROUD GRANDPARENT

I saw them last night! Robert and Ally. Playing munchkins in the Key West High School production of the Wizard of Oz.

They were absolutely magnificent! For real! They sang and danced like pros.

What impressed me before and after the show was how calm they were. Taking everything in stride.

There is a third component to the grandkid thing. Cameron. Cameron is not young, however. He is a high school senior. Off to college in September.

Cameron played the Straw Man. He was the best performer by far. I was impressed.  He should seriously consider pursuing dramatics as a career.

Needless to say, Lisa and Corey were proud parents..

My day yesterday started with the dentist once again. When will I finish?

Then to the Plantation Coffee House. The lovely Diane working.

I enjoy reading newspapers. Especially free ones. I spent about two hours drinking coffee and plodding through various newspapers.

Ran into an old friend yesterday. One I had not seen in several months. She looked terrific! Where have you been, I asked. I had a stroke, she replied.

We never know.

Celebrities keep popping up in Key West. Last week it was Robin Roberts. Half of the host team on Good Morning America. She was diagnosed with cancer several months ago. Had some heavy treatment. Including bone marrow transplant.

She was vacationing in Key West prior to returning to work this week. She was back on Good Morning America this past monday morning.

Good for her!
