BLACK PANTHERS RETURN

History repeats itself.
The Black Panther movement began in 1966 and had basically run its course by 1982. Small straggler groups of no significance remained.
Tough blacks! They challenged police brutality. For them, the revolution had come. Police were “pigs.” The Black Panthers were militants who believed in social revolution. They  burned and blew up buildings, shot and killed police officers. Vietnam was in full swing. They opposed the draft and de facto segregation.
In the end, some were killed, others went to jail, and a number have escaped capture and prosecution to this day. Interestingly, some became prominent political figures and were elected to public office.
Ferguson several months ago reactivated the movement. In Dallas, Texas. They call themselves the New Black Panthers.
Five insignificant groups existed in Dallas till the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson. The five came together and formed the Huey P. Newton Gun Club. Huey Newton was a leading Black Panther back when. Later when Staten Island’s
Eric Garner was killed, they added his death to their list of reasons why they exist.
The Dallas Black Panthers are shades of the 1960s organization.  They label police as “pigs.” and claim police brutalize black people.
The Black Panthers assert two reasons for their formation. They were formed for purpose of self-defense. The self-defense of blacks. A second reason is they support gun rights. Surprisingly, Texas is one of six States that does not have an open carry gun law. They support such a law. In so doing, they refer to themselves as the Black NRA.
The Dallas group consists of former Army Rangers and private citizens. They wear military apparel and carry assault rifles.
Violence begets violence. People can only be defecated on so long before they react. The Dallas Black Panthers are as Texans of old: Don’t Tread On Me!
The contingency refer constantly to the fact that in the past 12 years in Dallas, over 70 unarmed individuals have been shot and killed by police. Most of them black and Hispanic. They further are quick to point out that the Grand Jury process does not work. There have been no indictments in Dallas since 1973 of any police officer who killed any one.
They are serious-minded. They patrol Dallas streets. Their training significant. Knives play a big part. From their perspective, a knife changes the whole game. They train their “troops” to perform slash and stab maneuvers.
The group publicly marches singing…..”No longer will we let the pigs slaughter our brothers and sisters and not say a damn thing about it.” Also…..”I used to salute the f–king flag! Now I use it for a rag!” “Black power” is another chant.
They compare themselves to the American Revolution’s Minute Men.
The Dallas Black Panthers are not a rag tail group. They are well-funded. Donations come in from all over the country. Some think the Koch Brothers support them. They are not considered a liberal group. They are believed to be to the far right.
They are considered a hate group. Denounced as such by the Anti-Defamation League, The Southern Poverty Law Center and Bobby Seale. Bobby Seale co-founded the original Black Panthers with Huey Newton in 1966.
It is expected the movement will grow and spread.
Startling!
Assumed police power is the reason we are at this point. Police abuse in every form must be stopped. Attempts are being made. None enough. We are not even to first base yet in addressing the problem.

IN SEASON

The cartoon on the editorial page of this morning’s Key West Citizen has boldly written thereon Welcome to “In Season” in Key West. No question, the season has arrived. Tourists everywhere. Walking and driving difficult. Everyone happy. Why not, they are in Key West!

Twenty six years ago when I first visited Key West, the  “in season” was February 15 to Easter Sunday Monday. The first two weeks of January were dead. The next two weeks a smattering of tourists. Things picked up the first two weeks in February a bit. Then the avalanche began on February 15. It was like a water faucet had been turned on. People gushing all over the place.

Things have changed. Most certainly. And for the best! Key West is a vacation town. Its only business is tourism. Better closer to 12 months a year than 2.

I felt like a man lost in the desert yesterday afternoon. I wanted to watch the Syracuse/Clemson game. The plan was to meet Dan and Lisa at Jack Flats. I got there early. No Syracuse game. Jack Flats did not carry ESPN 3. Hustled over to Don’s Place. He gets everything on his TV sets. Again, no game.

David came in while I was complaining and explained to me that ESPN 3 only airs on the internet and certain cell phones.

I learned something.

Never got to see the game.

Probably for the best. Syracuse got whipped by Clemson 66-53. Prior to yesterday’s game, Clemson was described as the worst shooting team in the ACC. They found the range yesterday!

I have no further comment re the game.

The weather was a surprise yesterday. The weather report said 70 in the afternoon and 68 in the evening. Cold for Key Westers! It was cold cold on my deck overlooking the water. The ocean breeze always adds to a  cool day.

I dressed accordingly. Long pants, which I hate to wear, and a heavy long sleeved shirt.

When I got out of the car in Key West, the temperature was 78. I had to walk several blocks to Jack Flats and back. Sweating! It was a shorts and tee shirt day!

I mentioned yesterday hearing from some Greek and Italian friends about four jihadists hiding somewhere in Greece. One of some importance. Later in the day, they were arrested in Athens. The leader was Abou Omar Soussi. He was arrested in Omonia Square. Just behind the Square sits the Monastiraki. A Greek restaurant where I spent some afternoons sitting outside and enjoying a drink and bite to eat. I sometimes sat there a couple of hours. A great place to people  watch.

The world seems to get sicker by the day. Generally in Africa and the Middle East. Yesterday, on a road in South Jersey. A baby was found on fire in the middle of the road. Suffered severe burns. No further news was available.

PEOPLE GALORE

Sometimes I think I am beginning to lose it.

I thought I had an appointment to do a special stress test yesterday at 2. For some reason, it was giving me concern. I prepped for it. Stayed in thursday night. Missed the Bocce Party. Did not drink. Skipped lunch friday.

I walked into the doctor’s office, said my hellos and sat down. The receptionist walked over to me…..Mr. Petrone, your test is not till monday.

I went out last night and had a few drinks to make up for the previous 36 hours.

Jenna was my companion. A striking 28 year old woman! Does my heart good to be out with her on my  arm. Jenna advised we had not seen each other since Thanksgiving.

We started at the Chart Room. I had arranged to meet Don and Chris and Dan and Lisa for drinks. A good time. Good people.

Then it was Louis and Jenna off to the Hot Tin Roof for dinner. The place was jam packed. People waiting for tables. The bar humming.

Jenna is good company. It is constant conversation.

Don and Chris showed up a bit later. They were having dinner at the bar. They return to Syracuse tomorrow. Will not be with us for the Syracuse game this afternoon. I probably will not see them again till April.

I am watching the game at 4 at Jack Flats with Dan and Lisa. I have never watched a game at Jack Flats. When I used to try, I never could get a seat. Dan assures me not to worry. He will take care of everything.

Syracuse plays Clemson at Clemson. Syracuse a one point favorite. We shall see. My enthusiasm is contained.

Something disturbing is developing in the United States. Actually, many things. The one that concerns me today are debtor prisons. In 10 States, you can go to jail if you cannot pay certain bills. Traffic fines, for example. The problem is the incarcerated soul cannot work while in jail. The sum owed grows. He is charged with the cost of his confinement and other expenses. The bill gets larger and larger. He can never get out. Sort of like a Mafia loan. If you could not timely pay, the amount owed would double.

My KONK Life column for next week is Debtor’s Prison. I hope to write the article today before leaving for the game.

Turn a wrong into a right. I speak of Penn State and Joe Paterno. Yesterday, Penn State and the NCAA voted to reinstate Penn State’s 112 game record. More importantly, they voted to reinstate Joe Paterno.

The Sandusky scenario a perfect example of mob rule. Someone had to pay besides Sandusky. It was Penn State and Paterno. Joe Paterno’s statue was removed from campus, his name stricken from the glories of Penn State. He died soon after. Incomprehensible.

Justice was done yesterday.

Some interesting developments in the terrorist situation in Europe. It is thought the ISIS leader is holed up on one of the Greek isles. Two terrorist groups were captured near Chamonix. Chamonix is the French city I have visited several times in recent years.

I watched an interesting show on TV in the middle of the night when I could not sleep. Till recently, the girls and young ladies ISIS captured were forced to marry ISIS troops. Those refusing were killed. Not necessarily so any more. ISIS troops need blood for their wounded fighters. The girls and young ladies are used to provide it. Each person becomes a blood bank. Frequent withdrawals.

AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY

Monday night, the Tropic Cinema is showing the classic A Place In The Sun. The movie is based on Theodore Dreiser’s novel An American Tragedy. A movie worth seeing. I have seen it several times.

The court scene in the movie takes place in Herkimer, New York. Herkimer is a small community of about 8,000. It is the county seat. Also, it is 14 miles from Utica.

The court room in the film still stands. It continues to be used on a daily basis even today. The room is of so so size. Neither large nor small. The judge’s bench, witness chair, and jury box very close. Closer than in most court rooms. The room high ceilinged.

At the time of the filming, the ceiling was a robust painting. At some time, the ceiling was covered over.

The reason for this background information is simple. I tried many cases in that court room. It had its moment in history and you felt it every time you walked into the room.

Bocce party last night. I never made it. I was feeling tired and have a stress test today. I wanted to be in shape for the stress test so went to bed early.

One event at each bocce party is the Larry Smith Award. I do not know who it was presented to last night. It is a big deal! You have to be a bit crazy or unique to win it. Maybe something else. Hard to figure.

The reason I take the time to mention the Larry Smith award is because one year I won it. A proud moment!

The Cuban Queen is a sandwich shop. Its original location was and still is the side of the parking lot next to the wharf. I went for a while. The Cuban cheese toast with tomato was outstanding. I stopped going because the place had no tables. Merely a bench to sit on. It was not to my liking. Not convenient when trying to eat and read the newspaper at the same time.

The Cuban Queen recently bought Lobo’s. They are calling the new place Lobo’s Cuban Queen. Tables as well as benches. I will have to try it. I walked by yesterday looking it over. Looked good! I cannot eat Cuban bread while dieting. The key to good Cuban bread is pig lard. ‘Nuff said.

My yesterday was a 10 am meeting downtown. Then to the Beach Bar at the Pier House for a cup of coffee and newspaper reading. Followed by a hair cut with Lori. Spent the afternoon researching next week’s KONK Life column. Debtor’s Prison. Will write the article tomorrow.

Yesterday was a perfect day weatherwise. 74 degrees and cool. Cool enough for some to be wearing sweaters and jackets. Comfortable. The sun shining bright, of course.

A visit to Key West is not complete with out a ride to Big  Pine to visit the flea market. Huge and old fashioned. This weekend the 11th annual Nautical Flea Market will be held. Everything ocean involved. Worth seeing!

If you go, stop afterwards at Boondocks or No Name Pub for lunch. Makes for a perfect day.

The US and Cuba entered into an agreement yesterday making it easier for Americans to travel to Cuba. Visits will now be permitted without any special licensing. The trip must still be a supervised group one. You cannot just buy a ticket and fly down. However, all the paper work previously required has been done away with.

Big afternoon ahead. A stress test at 2. I hate them. Both the test and what might be discovered.

MEA CULPA

I screwed up!

Recall that tuesday evening, I could not get the Syracuse/Wake Forest game on TV. The game was at 8. I went to bed and fell asleep. Woke around 10:20. Tossed around a bit. Suddenly recalled the game. I was anxious to know the score.

I went downstairs to the computer. A basketball game is normally 2 hours. I assumed the game was over. It was not. Anyhow, I came up with a score that showed Syracuse losing by 1 in overtime. Not correct! The game was still on and the score represented the game to that point.

I marked down on my pad the score and that Syracuse had lost. Such led to my tirade in yesterday’s blog about good bye NCAA and hello NIT.

Sorry. Mea Culpa.

Surprisingly, only one person commented on what I consider was a big time error. Don of Don and Chris. Normally when I misstep, the world crashes down on me.

Worked with Sloan late in the afternoon. Some of you will be pleased with what has finally been accomplished. My KONK Life weekly column will be available on keywestlou.com starting today. Now.

Dinner last night was at Tavern ‘n Town. Ran into Dr. Jackie Lefferts and husband Michael in the lobby. Jackie is my internest. Good people!

Weddings have been held for years on the beaches of Key West. Especially Smathers Beach. Lovely to behold. Part of the Key West ambiance. The couples marry and leave the beach.

The City of Key West is not happy unless it taxes everything. Where ever a dollar can be made, the City will be there.

The City has been concerned with the private use of public property. Any use of public property is private. Think about it.

Wedding planners are a key component of the Key West way of life. At a recent meeting, the wedding planners agreed to pay the City a fee and also carry liability insurance to indemnify the City. In return, the wedding planners could use the beaches and Bayview Park to marry people. The wedding planners were also promised a better beach clean up and a 2nd bathroom facility on Smathers Beach. The City will also maintain  a list of “qualified and licensed” wedding planners.

Once regimented, always so. Wedding planners have come under the thumb of the City and will remain there forever. In future years, they will be imposed upon more.

Sissy Spacek’s new Netflix show Bloodline will be available sometime in March. People have been asking me when.

I believe that any action has an equal and opposite reaction. The tide may be turning against New York City’s PBA President Patrick Lynch.

Lynch has been President for many years. The last time he had an opponent was 12 years ago in 2003. A slate of officers have announced they are running against Lynch and his ticket in the June elections. Their position basically is that they do not care about an apology from the Mayor. They believe the PBA should be more concerned with their grievances and problems. Proof again that all politics is local.

Bocce party tonight. Our end of the season bocce banquet. Will be fun!

STRUCK OUT TWO TIMES

Sometimes you can’t win. Last night was one of those times.

I had a doubleheader going. My blog talk radio show and Syracuse/Wake Forest. I got to do neither. Struck out two times.

I have to connect with the Blog Radio Broadcasting Station to do the show. I could not connect, as many times as I tried. No way the show could be broadcast.

Syracuse was playing Wake Forest. I wanted to watch the game. No way. ESPN was not broadcasting the game in Florida. Some other ACC game was being aired.

The inability to do the show bothered me. I had spent time all week getting ready and then yesterday fine tuning the material. Most of the topics will go in the waste basket. They will be too old to broadcast next week. Topics discussed are timely. A week later not.

My day time big event was visiting Tammy at Lee Nails for a manicure. Tammy is an Asian beauty.

Her story interesting. Tammy came to the United States at age 15. She is now 32. Married at some point. She and her husband own and operate Lee Nails. They are hard workers. They were able to buy their first home last year. Two lovely children. The American dream come true!

Lee Nails is located on Flagler in the Habana Shopping Center. The business primarily locals. Tammy says she does not think any tourists come to her. Flagler is off the beaten track for tourists. The business busy and highly successful.

I read about the Syracuse/Wake Forest game on the internet after it was over. Syracuse lost in overtime by one point. 75-74. Syracuse was a 10 point favorite.

With the loss, the door to the NCAA tournament was closed. A new one opened, however. The NIT. Playing in the NIT is like being a second class citizen.

Would you believe…..fog again this morning! Two days in a row. Three times in a week. What is going on?

The fog this morning is strange. When I came downstairs at 7, it was moderate. I could see far out on the ocean. A half hour later, I could barely see 200 feet out into the ocean. The fog had more than developed. It was significantly heavier.

I did some quick research on the internet re fogs before writing. Came away confused. I did not understand. What I got out of the mumbo jumbo is that “inversion” is involved. Whatever that is.

Unquestionably, I am a die hard Syracuse fan. My friend David a similar Ohio State fan. I forgot to congratulate David in yesterday’s blog re the victory. A great year for Ohio State! Enjoy it, David!

EXCELLENT RUNNING GAME

The best in college football last night!

Ohio State beat Oregon 42-20. I was surprised. I thought Oregon would win by a similar score. I felt Oregon’s quick offense would carry the day. Instead, it was Ohio State in every way. Especially its running game.

I enjoyed the game from the comfort of my bed.

Fog again this morning!

In all the years I have spent in Key West, fog has been rare. Once or twice a year perhaps. Today marked the second time in a week there has been fog in the morning.

Going to be a hot one today. Eighty degrees.

I had to hurry yesterday’s blog to get to the doctor. I was having chest pains. Had them all night. I was concerned. Got the blog out first. Probably stupid, but that is how humans behave sometimes.

Several tests were run on me. Heart ok. Going to do a stress test friday just in case.

Funny part of all this is that I have had no pain since I visited with my heart doctor.

Topics tonight include a  Greece update, the Saudis condemning a man for building a snow man,  islands in danger of drowning, more young people being killed by guns rather than cars, an update on the NYPD slowdowns, a 9 year old arrested for stealing a pack of gum, US Department of Health execs flying first class to the tune of $31 million over a four year period, and more.

Sunday’s Paris march impressive! Obama did not go nor send someone big in his administration in his place. Right or wrong, who knows. Many European leaders are 1-3 hours from Paris. Obama’s trip longer. Note that the Presidents of Canada and Mexico did not attend either.

Personally, I think Obama should have gone. Had he been aware in advance that the march would be such a success, he probably would have gone. Regardless, the White House blew it.

Big party tonight at Mangrove Mama’s. Howard Livingston’s party for friends of Howard Livingston. Definitely will be a fun event.

THREE SPORT NIGHTS

Blog brief this morning. I have to get to doctor’s.

Watched Syracuse handily beat Florida State last night. Watched at the Garden spot of Key West. Behind the outside bar at Don’s place. The same place where we watch pro football Sunday afternoons.

Don and Chris, Dan and Lisa and their daughter Alex with me. A good time! Made better because Syracuse won and by more than 1 or 2 points.

Tonight THE college football game of the year. I will be watching from my bed. Game will go on till after midnight. The best place for me to watch it is bed. I will probably fall asleep before it is over.

Tomorrow night Syracuse plays again. Wake Forest. My blog talk radio show Tuesday Talk with Key West Lou in the middle of the game. Ergo, I will be watching the game from home from whence the broadcast is aired.

Weather back to exceptional. 80 degrees yesterday. High today will be 81. I spent some time laying by the pool. Fell asleep.

The solidarity march in Paris yesterday impressed me. One million in Paris. Four million throughout France. Forty plus world leaders in the front lines.

Did the US screw up? Obama not there. Nor Biden. The Attorney General in Paris on other business. He did not attend. Our only representative was the US Ambassador to France.

Howard Livingston and Mile Marker 24 having a big bash tomorrow night at Mangrove Mama’s. Howard’s followers primarily. A fun time dancing and enjoying Howard event.

PORN FOOD

What a title!

I was sitting at the round table in the Chart Room last night with some old friends and some new. Alicia was the culprit. I had met her once before. She is Sheila’s friend. Also at the table were Alicia’s husband Trevor and a North Carolinian Mark. Both new to me. Plus, the eternal David.

Alicia asked if I wanted to see some porn food. I squeamishly asked what it was. After some joking around the table, I was shown cell phone pictures of porn food.

Turns out Alicia is a gourmet cook. Loves to cook! The pictures were of various dishes she had prepared. Alicia described how most of the dishes were put together. Interesting. Mouth watering.

I commented man has two great drives. His mouth and his genitals. Ergo,  it made sense to describe food from a sexual perspective.

Mark works part time as a Washington, DC  public relations consultant. I enjoyed chatting with him.

Alicia and Trevor are returning to Key West in March. It was agreed a cook out would be held at Sheila’s apartment at that time. Sheila is a fabulous cook, also. I hope they remember to invite me.

As expected, Don and Chris arrived. My Syracuse friends. They got up at 3;30 yesterday morning to catch a 6 am plane. They live outside Syracuse. When they left the house at 4:30, it was minus 10 degrees.

Don and Chris are here for a week. I will see them frequently. We have become good friends over the years.

Tonight is Syracuse basketball! Playing Florida State at 8. Don, Chris and I will be watching the game at Don’s Place.

Which brings me to Dan and Lisa. You have been hiding! I understand you have been in town a week. For shame, we did not get together. Join us at Don’s Place for the game.

Dan and Lisa are from Skaneateles, a town outside Syracuse. They own a restaurant. They will be here for two months.

The game is at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. The poor Florida State players are going to get a taste of real COLD!

Syracuse is favored by 12 points. I have no comment. I do not know anymore.

I am impressed with the march that is to take place in Paris today. The French people are standing up to the terrorists. What is most impressive is the number in the march is estimated at 1 million. Another impressive factor is that the heads of many nations are joining the march. Forty four. Leaders such as Germany’s Merkel, Britain’s Cameron, Italy’s Renzi, and Israel’s Netanyahu.

I hope nothing happens during the parade.

RANK INSUBORDINATION

On December 20 in New York City, two police officers were shot and killed while sitting in a police car. Two days later, the PBA, the  police organization authorized to collectively bargain with the City on behalf of its members, began an aggressive campaign aimed at the Mayor.

The PBA became angered with New York Mayor de Blasio for comments he had made to his bi-racial son regarding how to conduct himself any time a police officer stopped him. The Mayor is a Caucasian man married to an Afro-American woman.

PBA President Lynch blamed the Mayor for the shooting of the two police officers. He said their blood was on the hands of the Mayor. Lynch claimed the Mayor’s advice to his son and subsequent release of that information to the public was inflammatory and abusing as regards police officers.

In addition to the blood comments, New York City police have turned their backs on the Mayor whenever he has been speaking or at a public event.

There is another reason why Lynch and the PBA are conducting themselves in this fashion. The PBA is without a contract with the City. It ran out. A new one has not been agreed to. Negotiations are presently underway to agree on a new contract. Some quarters believe Lynch and the PBA are conducting themselves as they are in order to gain leverage in the negotiations.

Some believe there is an additional threat. If the Mayor does not submit to PBA demands, an armed organized rebellion against civilian control could occur. Sounds far-fetched. However in today’s police/citizen climate, anything is possible. The PBA has been quick to remind that they are 35,000 strong, that they have more members than the FBI.

A police stoppage has occurred since December 22. Police are performing their duties not as before and not as normal.

Traffic tickets are off 94 percent. Down from 10,069 to 587. Summonses for low level violations are also down 94 percent. Down from 4,831 to 300. Parking tickets are off 92 percent. 14,699 to 1,241.

The Mayor is the civilian head of the Police Department. Just as the President is commander in chief of the armed forces. Public officials in New York State have no right to strike. They do have a right to bargain for benefits. The strike leverage is not available to them. Nor are work stoppages.

Calvin Coolidge was Governor of Massachusetts in 1919 when the Boston police went on strike. He said, “There is no right to strike against the public safety, anywhere, anytime.” More recently recall President Reagan in 1981 with the air controllers. The controllers went on strike. Reagan said no way could public employees strike. He gave them two days to return to work or they were fired. Most continued to challenge Reagan. Eleven thousand were fired.

Interestingly, people thought Reagan would not deal so harshly with the controllers. How were planes to fly in our busy air corridors? Reagan called their bluff and the planes continued to safely fly.

New York State has had on its books for years the Taylor Law. It covers the relationship of management and labor regarding civil employees. The Taylor Law is clear. It prohibits work stoppages and strikes. Union officials violating the Taylor Law are subject to arrest. The charge is criminal. Additionally every officer participating in a work stoppage or strike can be fined $2 for every $1 of earnings.

An all out confrontation has not yet occurred. de Blasio is keeping his cool while Lynch is ranting and raving. If push came to shove and work stoppages continue, the Mayor could ask the Governor to send in the National Guard to perform police functions.

I think Lynch and the PBA are wrong. The Mayor is in charge. He is the civilian authority. I view what the PBA is doing as an arrogant assault on democracy. A further dilemma arises. If the police do not follow rules, why should the people?

Much has been written and spoken in and by the media regarding this confrontation. I have not found one article completely supportive of the PBA’s position. Those siding with the PBA generally acknowledge the PBA’s conduct is wrong. However, they encourage the Mayor to apologize. Seemingly an apology would settle the situation.

Most of the articles written refer to the police conduct as treasonous, rogue, mutinous, exploitative of the two police killings, a coup in the works, the usurpation of the Mayor’s authority, an all out assault on the Mayor, and defiant.

Strong characterizations. However if the shoes fit, Kelly and the PBA should wear them.
