CONCH REPUBLIC ANNEXES USA

Marty (the other one) is a loyal blog reader. He emailed a suggestion apparently motivated by the government shutdown and American life in general.

Words of wisdom.

Marty suggested the Conch Republic annex the United States. His reasons were simple. Leadership would be easier. People’s attitudes lighter. Americans would start enjoying life for a change.

Right on my friend!

The vote has been tabulated. The people heard. The ballot question yesterday as to whether Key West participate in a free study to determine the feasibility of dredging the channel to accommodate larger mega cruise ships went down to defeat. Significantly! By 3-1. 74 per cent of the people voted against it.

Hooray for democracy!

There is a lady named Anna who once a week comes by. She cleans the house and washes and irons. For the past eight years. Anna is not responsible for the outside. A task in and of itself. I either hire some one to do it or do it myself.

Yesterday morning, I felt energized. I was in a work mood. I did a bit of clean up of the deck.

Palm trees can be a pain. Fallen coconuts and palm branches. Took care of them. The deck at one end was covered with what looked like berries. I do not know what they really were. Living on the ocean, you never know what is going to be blown in. I swept up the berries. I finished by hosing the deck and furniture.

An ambitious undertaking for Louis!

I was still full of energy. Sex would have been good. Decided to walk. Drove to Duval Square and parked the car. Walked towards the Atlantic Ocean. Past La Te Da. Down to the Southernmost Complex. Through the Southernmost grounds. Across the street onto the Reach’s grounds. Through them. Then did the return trip the same way.

Took all of 25 minutes. Felt like an hour or more. The humidity was heavy! Very heavy! My tee shirt soaking wet. I did not think I was going to make it back to the car.

Stopped at Publix on the way home. Needed bananas and strawberries. They are staples to me.

Spent the afternoon fine tuning last night’s blog talk radio show. Tuesday Talk with Key West Lou.

Made a sandwich for dinner.

Afterwards, went upstairs to lie on the bed and watch Chris Matthews. It was 7 o’clock. I fell asleep. I woke at five minutes to 9. The radio show begins at 9. I ran downstairs, turned on the computer and did all the things necessary to get on air. As I connected, I heard…..Your show goes live in 10 seconds.

A close call.

It was an easy show to do. What with the governmental shutdown and governmental waste. I threw a little Greece in and the half hour was over.

I have stayed in the past few nights.  I have to get out tonight. I will get out tonight.

Enjoy your day!

SWIM MEET THIS MORNING

Big morning! Robert and Ally are participating in their first competitive swim race. At the college. Lisa said they were up at 5:30 all excited. I will be there!

Yesterday, the show! The Key West Lou Legal Hour. Went well. I love doing the show and that may contribute to its success. I especially enjoy doing it live on television.

Two topics received the most post show comment.

One was the report that soon smart phones and tablets will be operated by the eyes. Impressive!

The other had to do with camera and microphones being built into TV sets. The purpose is so others can watch us as we watch TV. To help advertisers decide what we like. Beware! One major TV manufacturer has already dione it with certain of its 2012 models. Quietly and unbeknownst to the American public.

Yesterday was December 7. Pearl Harbor.

It bothers me that in recent years more is not made of the day. We cannot forget. We should not forget. The best tribute I could find yesterday was the movie Tora Tora Tora on Turner Classics.

Pearl Harbor galvanized America. It educated a generation that would never have seen college. Many your grandfathers and fathers. The education created a previous non existent middle class. Finally, the day eventually led to a prosperity the Nation had never known.

It was announced yesterday that the US Supreme Court was going to hear the same sex marriage issue. Finally.

I am concerned with the possible result. The Court has four conservative Justices and four Liberal ones. An even split in the anticipated vote. The remaining Justice swings both ways. Justice Kennedy. I have been saying for two years that I am fearful Kennedy will vote the wrong way. With the conservatives. Defeating same sex marriage.

I could be wrong.

The way around the problem is for one of the Justices to resign or pass on. Then Obama would get to name the replacement. Undoubtedly a liberal and a vote for same sex marriage.

Yesterday was a lot of nothing that kept me busy all day. A manicure with Tammy. A walk starting at Square One and going through the Southernmost and Reach and then back to Square One. Wrote next week’s article for KONK Life. Worked on my new radio show. The Key West Lou Blog Talk Radio Show. The radio show kicks off at 7 in the morning on Tuesday, December 18. Join me. A half hour talk show. Listeners can call in.

Directions as to how to find the blog radio show will follow soon.

Time to shower and head over to the college. A proud grandfather morning ahead!

Enjoy your day!

DOWN SYNDROME BEAUTIES SWIMMING

Key West rain is strange.

I was driving into Key West yesterday morning heading to Duval Street to walk. Sun bright in Key Haven. Streets dry. Made the turn off US 1 onto the boulevard, the road was still dry. New Town all the way down dry. Then I hit Old Town. Had it rained! Puddles everywhere. Streets wet wet.

Never ceases to amaze me.

Did I walk yesterday! All over the place. Did Duval and several of the side streets. Stopped in some stores. Even stopped in St. Paul’s Church on Duval.

For years, St. Paul’s had one hour of music at noon monday through friday. For anyone who wanted to stop in. A full range of music played. Organ and piano. From classical to Broadway.

The music hour also provided an opportunity to escape the heat and cool down..

I stopped in yesterday. No music. Church deserted. I was disappointed. If anyone knows why, let me know.

I sat a while and studied the ceiling structure. All wood. Many criss crossing beams. Interesting construction. I sense the intertwined beams has something to do with keeping the roof in place during a hurricane.

My walk took me back to Clinton Square Market. Not a locals place. A tourist location. Merchants have to do a big business in the four hours a ship is in. Apparently they do.

There is a small store called Sweets of Paradise. Fudge, cookies and ice cream. I was tempted to buy a piece of fudge. Mouth watering. I overcame the temptation, however. Not yet.

Robert and Ally have graduated. They were in an advanced swimming class two days a week for one hour each day. They became sufficiently proficient that they were promoted. To the swimming team! Now they practice one hour a day three days a week.

The name of the team? Does it compete? Against who? I don’t know. Lisa did not know. We are going with the flow.

Robert and Ally and all the participants looked good. Grammar and high school swimmers. They swim the full hour, alternating strokes. All under the guidance of coaches who constantly yell corrections to them.

My fish looked good!

The swimming takes place at the Florida Keys Community College. In the back of the college near open water is an Olympic size pool. It was filled yesterday at practice time. Easily a 100 kids in the water.

In the first lane were two lovely young ladies. One 3, the other 4. Down syndrome girls.

They were alone in the lane, except for two coaches. The coaches appeared to be college students. I watched these two young ladies practice their swimming for 1.5 hours. Each had her own coach with her at all times. The girls knew how to swim. As 3 and 4 year olds do. The coaches were there not only to watch them, but also to provide guidance and support.

Down syndrome children are natuarally happy. The two swimming exceeded the normal bounds of happiness. They were exhuberant! Having a ball!

I decided on a change of pace last night. Thought I would go to Louie’s Backyard for a drink and take it from there. As I was driving over, it rained again. Big time! I changed course and went to Southernmost’s Beachside Restauant. Open sided with a roof on top.

There I stayed for a while. Enjoyed dinner at the bar.

I observed a nearby couple drinking pina coladas. Looked good! I had not had one in years. So…..I ordered a pina colada after dinner. Good the first few sips. Then too heavy for me. I could not finish it.

Today…..I do not know. I have some work to do on the trip pics. We are close to publishing them! Sloan is coming over at 5 to work with me. Do not expect the pics tomorrow. Soon, however.

Enjoy your day!
