HE IS RISEN, HE’S NOT HERE

Easter Sunday is a major Christian holiday. Christ rose from the dead!

Some recollections of my Italian Easter.

As a boy, I recall everyone dressing and going to Church on Easter Sunday. I always had a suit which I had to wear that day. The whole family dressed. This was not an Italian thing alone. My recollection is everyone, regardless of ethnic background, dressed.

It was like Easter Sunday on Fifth Avenue. People nodding Happy Easters as they passed on the way to and from Church.

Dinners were festive family events.

As a boy, we ate at my grandparents’. My father’s parents. Aunts, uncles and cousins. Card tables added to the already large kitchen table to accommodate everyone.

We were poor. The holiday meal was grandiose nevertheless. Pasta, of course. Sauce meats such as meatballs, pork and beef. No roasts. They came many years later when some family members became financially sufficient. Chickens instead. Male chickens which had been neutered. Referred to as capons. Cheap in comparison to meats. Denutting the roosters made them grow larger and their meat more tender.

There was Easter bread. Bland large pieces of bread home made with 2-3 hard boiled eggs (still in their shells) cooked into the bread. Not one of my favorites. No taste.

Easter eggs were colored by boiling onion skins and dipping the eggs in the brown residue. It was years before I knew people actually colored eggs by buying paints.

Soap was used to write names on the eggs before dunking them in the onion liquid.

As time progressed, two items began appearing that were not there in earlier years. I cannot recall exactly when. Both items became my favorites. Cassata and sausage pie.

Cassata absolutely the best!

Its basis was ricotta. Added was lemon, chocolate chips, candied fruit including red and green cherries, and a bit of liquor.

The result was a pie. Cassata pie.

Baked in a 3 inch deep dish. The dish wide/large. A thick hard crust surrounding the entire dish. Top, sides and bottom.

Cooled in the refrigerator. Generally enough to pick on for at least a week. The taste divine.

I recall my mother and wife making it. Lisa does a stripped down version. A small pie vanilla flavored. She does not add the chocolate, candied fruits, etc.

Needless to say, a heavy dish. Once consumed, it stayed with you for a while.

The other I could die for Easter dish was sausage pie. Sausage and mozzarella baked in a typical pie fashion dish. As with the cassata, totally enclosed in crust.

Sausage pie was really heavy. More so than the cassata. Large amounts could not be consumed at one time. Its great taste kept one coming back however for days consuming small slices.

My wife was Sicilian. She brought the Sicilian touch to our Easter dinner table. Lamb. As the family grew, so did the meat variations. A prime rib and stuffed meat roll of some sort were added.

I want to conclude writing about an item not Italian nor something I experienced. Rather it involves a story few are aware of. So for the first time, I share a brief history of Easter eggs. Not the brown onion skin colored ones my grandmother made. This story goes back hundreds of years and involves Christ himself.

At a time following Christ having risen from the dead, Easter eggs became popular. Born of Christ’s crucifixion and having risen from the dead.

The hard boiled egg came to symbolize the empty tomb of Jesus. Cracking the egg represented Christ leaving the tomb. The eggs at the time were stained a bright red. So colored in memory of the blood Christ shed at the time of His crucifixion.

Happy Easter my friends!

KEY WEST HAS CHANGED DRAMATICALLY

I keep writing and talking about Key West having changed dramatically. It began with COVID.

I have experienced Key West for some 30 years. I concede things change with time. The Key West change has been rapid however.

Citizens’ Voice this morning had a comment from someone who only moved to Key West in 2021: “We moved here in 2021 for the weather and Keys lifestyle. We have discovered reality is we don’t like all the tourists, the high prices, poor service and the attitude of so many. Sadly, it is time to move already.”

Such does not mean everyone walks around with a long face. I saw the contrary yesterday.

Stopped in Publix to pick up a prescription. It was not ready.

The store was crowded. Baskets full. Many with 2 baskets. Everyone smiling. Appeared holiday happy.

I have spoken of food expense. Not tomorrow. People are eating big Easter Sunday. Their attitude appeared to be what the hell, let’s enjoy for a day!

As it should be.

Can always save on groceries next week.

COVID our recent calamity. In 1833, it was cholera for the people of Key West.

On this day in 1833, the disease was rampant. People were fleeing the island. The military garrison, except for 1 officer and 3 men. Residents were escaping as fast as they could. Physicians included.

It was on this day in 1928 that Ernest Hemingway and wife Pauline arrived for the first time. They came on a steamship from Havana. Hemingway’s intent was to stay for a few days. He had ordered a new Ford and was waiting for its delivery. The Ford came. Hemingway stayed. For ten years.

The March job report is out. Another good month. The report showed continued signs of strength. Unemployment fell to 3.5 percent, the U.S. economy added 236,000 jobs.

Pope Francis spoke recently on sex. Some of his comments: Using dating apps…..to meet potential partners is “normal” / Catholic Church’s thinking on sex is “still in diapers” / “Sex is one of the beautiful things God gave to human beings” / Sex is “an expression of love” / Re abortion, he instructed priests ministering woman who have had such to “not ask many questions and be merciful, such as Jesus was” / Re transgender, nonbinary and LGBTQ, “the Church cannot close its doors on anybody…..My job is to receive, always.”

An unusual Masters. All kinds of strange things happening.

The weather not the best yesterday. Strong winds. Several trees fell in the spectator area near the 17th hole. No one was injured. Play was suspended till today. Today worse weather expected, including cold. In the 50’s.

Bruce Koepka has been working on a comeback for several years. A round at a time. He may have finally made it. At the end of 2 days, he leads the Masters by 3 shots with a minus 12.

A few amateurs are permitted to play each year. Sam Bennett is one of them. He is in third place with a minus 8. Only 20 years old. A sophomore at Texas Tech. He could win. Would be a first.

Great Rory McIlroy did not make the cut. Shot a 77 yesterday. His game seemed to be off just a bit on each shot and putt. For two consecutive days. Played poorly in his last tournament also.

Except for a quick trip to Publix for a prescription pick up, today will be spent at home. Watching the Masters, of course. The reason I will be in is because I hurt. Chest pains earlier this morning. Woke also with left ankle giving me trouble and sciatica pains in right thigh.

I’m doing good! A joke, of course.

Enjoy your day!

JUSTICE THOMAS’ BAD TRAITS FINALLY COMING TO LIGHT AFTER 30 YEARS

I thought Clarence Thomas was a bad choice for the Supreme Court when approved in 1991. He has done nothing in his 30 plus years on the bench to change my thinking. I believed Anita Hill and thought Thomas was lying during the Judiciary Committee inquiry. He is the only Supreme Court Justice who basically failed to ask questions during his first 25 ears on the bench. Something I attribute to his lack of confidence in himself. His decisions far right. He supports the NRA, has been anti-abortion, and generally votes with corporate America as opposed to the little guy. His ethics increasingly questionable. He is a black man who wanted to be white. He has succeeded in that regard in every respect.

No question. I consider him one of the poorest choices ever for the esteemed position he holds.

In the last 24 hours, another Clarence Thomas revelation. One where he again has overstepped the bounds of propriety. In this instance to the tune of $500,ooo. He and his wife accepted a luxury trip via private jet and a super yacht to Indonesia.

Not the first trip paid for by someone else. The someone else being billionaire and far right Republican megadonor Harlan Crow. Crow has made possible multiple big time trips for Thomas world wide over the past 20 years.

President Biden criticized the Indonesia trip yesterday. I expect Biden would. Strange at the same time. Strange from an historical perspective. In October 1991, then Senator Biden was Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. Biden was very disrespectful to Anita Hill. Biden clearly showed it. Though anti-Hill and her position, he nevertheless voted against Thomas’ nomination. Strange in itself under the circumstances.

I believed Hill re the sexual claims she made against Thomas. I considered Biden’s treatment of her sad.

Thomas played it well. Responded to the charges as “sleaze…..gossip…..and lies.” Characterized the Committee’s hearing as a “circus” and “national disgrace.”

Thomas’ biggest bomb was when he referred to the televised hearing as “a high tech lynching for uppity Blacks.” The last comment made with all the emotion expected from a black man being felt put upon. From my perspective, he lied well to save his ass.

I repeat again that Biden over the years has acknowledged he was wrong in effect in how he treated Hill.

A simple solution is available. Pressure Thomas with his “wrongdoings” over the years. They are all true. Force him to resign. Replace him with Anita Hill who has distinguished herself over the years as a law professor.

It is time to correct the wrong done her and the nation.

I wrote briefly yesterday re the cost of eggs and increased use during Easter time. Andy is a blog reader. He commented: “On March 29, 2003 CNN (and others) published: Cal-Maine Foods, the largest egg producer in the United States, reposted revenue doubled and profit surged 718 percent this last quarter because of sharply higher egg prices.”

Another it’s nobody’s business Florida proposed law: No talking about menstruation in school until the 6th grade.

The bill passed the Florida House March 31.

If a female student askes questions about menstruation in the 4th or 5th grade, they are not to be answered.

DeSantis is expected to sign the bill into law.

What happened to the sanctity of the home in dealing with such matters?

In mine, we had 3 daughters. Their mother, sisters, and even Grandma, dealt with the issue. It was a personal female family thing. Government is not needed in every aspect of a person’s sexual life.

The Tennessee House of Representatives treated 3 members disgracefully yesterday. In doing so, showed what they are. A bunch of old white men acting as gun supported racists.

Disgusting!

The conduct of the House will lead to its detraction as a Republican power base. Expect Democrats in the next 2-3 elections to take control. Today’s people will not tolerate such conduct. It’ s a new world in the making. Youngsters reaching voting age, Trump’s MAGA madness base eroding.

On this day in 1935, Joseph “Sloppy Joe” Russell moved his bar from 428 Greene Street to its present location on the corner of Duval and Greene Streets.

Ernest Hemingway helped his friend Joe Russell with the physical move.

A busy afternoon ahead. A pedicure and manicure  at noon. Followed by lunch at Hogfish. I have a craving for lobster bisque.

Enjoy your day!

HOLY THURSDAY

Holy Thursday. Also known as Maundy Thursday. A holy day for Christians.

I am Catholic. I write from the Catholic perspective and experience.

Holy Thursday is the day before Good Friday. Good Friday the day Christ was crucified.

Holy Thursday is best recalled for the Last Supper. Jesus gathered the 12 disciples and Mary Magdalen for the dinner. The dinner was celebrated as a Passover feast.

Many first time events took place at the Last Supper. Holy Communion and the priesthood. In addition, Jesus washed the feet of the disciples. An act of humility. He also announced that one of the disciples would betray Him and another deny Him thrice. Judas and Peter respectively.

The group, except for Judas, then moved to Mount Olives. Judas left to betray Jesus.

Gethsemane was a garden at the foot of Mount Olives. The disciples went to sleep. Jesus remained awake and suffered the agony He knew was to occur. His anguish so deep that “His sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling to the ground.” Luke 22:43-44.

Jesus was arrested at Gethsemane. What followed was the Crowning with Thorns, beatings and ultimately death by Crucifixion.

Da Vinci painted the Last Supper. One of the most magnificent art works of all time. Not on canvas. On a wall in the basement of a building in Milan. I have visited the work on two occasions. On each occasion, I sat on a bench in awe for long periods of time with my eyes exploring every aspect of the painting. As if I were part of the dinner.

The painting large. Long and tall.

Cathy is visiting Italy with her sister for 3 weeks in August. They will be in Milan for a few days. I have told her the Last Supper is a “must” on her list of things to see.

Eggs continue to be expensive. Demand exceptionally high this week already. Easter eggs! Time to color!

On this day in 1896, the first modern Olympic Games were formally opened in Athens, Greece.

Athens is a lovely city. Exciting. Much like Miami, New York and Chicago.

My travels took me many times to Athens. I began my Greece trips with a few days in the beginning and a few days at the end in Athens. In between, a couple of months visiting the Greek isles.

Athens has two not to miss places. One, Acropolis and Parthenon. Acropolis is a tall hill located in Athens itself. On top of which sits the temple Parthenon and other ancient structures. The other, several acres called Plaka. A playland in the center of Athens. Surrounds Acropolis. Street cafes, restaurants, booths selling every conceivable thing. A fun place day and night. I preferred evenings. Some drink and food. Dancing like a Greek, breaking a few dishes. I believe in the adage when in Rome, do as the Romans do.

South Roosevelt Boulevard from Bertha Street to the end of Samthers Beach is under major restoration. Involved are widening and rising of the street. Expected time to complete 27 months.

As I was driving along yesterday, I turned on the radio. Searched for a talk show. Found one. MAGA!

Biden trashed, Trump glorified. Not my cup of tea.

Turned out to be FOX’s Hannity. Guesting was Newt Gingrich. Haters! How could anyone buy the garbage they were spewing? People do.

A new variation on an old cry by MAGA: April 3, 2023, the day Trump was indicted, is the day America became a banana republic. Not quite accurate. The U.S. leaning in the banana republic direction began when Trump was elected President.

The nation must clean up its act and get rid of Trump. A slight variance on words Trump introduced in his campaign against Hillary Clinton: “Jail her!” The corrected version: “Jail him!”

Do it!

Such is on the road to occurring. Trump wrought. He is bringing it on himself.

The Masters begins today! I have some errands to run following which I will bury myself in front of the TV set.

Enjoy your day!

BIG TREES FROM LITTLE ACORNS GROW

Trump has four criminal matters pending. The Manhattan one the furthest along the way. Trump was indicted yesterday.

The indictment contained thirty four felony charges. The matter involves the $130,000 hush money payment to Stormy Daniels. The case initially considered the smallest of the four pending criminal matters. No more. A perfect example how big trees from little acorns grow.

District Attorney Alvin Bragg has been beat up the past several months. Criticized by Trump, his attorneys, Republican cohorts and many others for the way he was handling the case and the time he was taking with it. Bragg and his wife were verbally attacked as part of the process.

A lesson to be learned. Don’t defecate on someone who holds power over your life. I doubt Bragg would have thrown the book at Trump with the thirty four felony charges approach if Trump and his people had not climbed all over him.

Only one guilty out of the thirty four felonies charged is needed to convict. For a felony that could carry jail time with it.

Judge Merchan is not going to be happy with Trump after Trump lashed out at him in his Mar-a-Lago address last night. Especially after the Judge nicely admonished him in court yesterday to cease and desist.

Trump assailed Judge Merchan, his family, and Bragg. He said, Merchan was “a hating judge with a Trump hating wife and family.” He specifically attacked Merchan’s daughter. It is being reported this morning her photo is being circulated on the internet.

Very few photos were permitted of Trump during his court appearance. The few were enough to tell a story, however. He looked tired and beat up. Seething. Like he couldn’t wait to break out and do his thing – as he did last night in his Mar-a-Lago address.

Criminal law was not my specialty, though I did try several significant criminal cases. I was hired for my courtroom abilities. Ergo, I do not hold myself out as a criminal law expert. However after hearing Bragg’s indictment and supporting fact materials explained by knowledgeable criminal attorneys in New York and across the country, I am impressed with the Bragg indictment. Trump’s attorneys and Republican friends can blubber all they want about the thirty four felony approach being nothing. Deep down they know two things. They were caught with their pants down and in the end Trump’s conviction for something is inevitable.

Bragg fooled them all!

Significant Key West news.

Cathy and I had some time sunday before her plane. I decided to try Perry Hotel on Stock Island for brunch. I noticed a few weeks ago that Sloppy Joe’s had opened a dining and drinking facility at the Perry Hotel. When I checked the internet for the phone number of Sloppy’s, it stated closed temporarily.

So much for Sloppy’s at the Perry Hotel.

I thought the closing strange. Discovered why this morning. The Perry Hotel and Marina has been sold. Purchased for $67 million in 2 separate purchases by Miami realtors.

Harry Truman loved Key West and Key West loves Harry Truman.

Truman continued to visit Key West after he was no longer President. His last visit was in 1969. On this day in that year he and Bess left Key West after a 2 week visit.

Today the day that made Bum Farto famous.

It was on this day in 1976 that he failed to appear for sentencing on a drug conviction in federal court in Miami. He was never seen again.

“Where are you Bum Farto?”

Enjoy your day!

TODAY THE DAY…..FINALLY TRUMP WILL STAND BEFORE A JUDGE TO ANSWER FOR THE FIRST OF HIS ALLEGED CRIMES

Never thought this day would arrive. Trump truly teflon when it came to answering for purported misdeeds. No more. Today, in New York. Tomorrow, Georgia and Washington, D.C.

It is a disgrace the nation has to be subjected to Trump’s indictment. However, he deserves to experience and suffer its shame.

The rule Biblically and otherwise is man is required to pay for his sins. Today is Trump’s first day in the process.

He deserves the embarrassment and personal fear he must have within him this day.

I wrote a few days ago about a Trump supporter who compared Trump’s feelings this week to experiences Christ suffered during Holy Week. A disgrace to place Trump and Christ on the same level in any regard.

Bess Levin published an article yesterday the title of which spells out Trump’s feelings in a similar fashion: Donald Trump, No Joke, Believes What He’s Going Through Is Like The Crucifixion Of Jesus Christ. In the article, Levin wrote: Trump believes he is “absorbing pain for everyone.”

He considers himself Christ like!

The man is demented!

“I have a dream.” Famous words spoken by Martin Luther King Jr. on August 28, 1963. He spoke them frequently in the years that followed.

Five years later on this day in 1968, King was shot and killed.

A recognized American hero. His statue holds a significant place among the Washington Memorials. Trump will never be recognized as an American hero nor will he have a place in the Washington Memorials.

I am beginning to think DeSantis is worse than Trump. He already far exceeds Trump in radicalism.

Gun violence an example.

Monday, DeSantis signed a new gun law for Florida. Signed the law in his official office with a strange exception. The signing was not public. Conducted behind closed doors. Present only several members of the NRA.

The new law allows concealed guns to be carried in Florida without permits. Anyone and everyone 18 or over permitted to do so.

Makes it easier for guns to kill children. Such will be DeSantis’ heritage.

DeSantis also recently signed another gun law. Whacky also.

The law broadens a 2011 law that can make local governments pay as much as $100,000 if one is sued for for suppressing gun regulations.

In other words, DeSantis wants to stop local governments once and for all from, as he perceives it,  violating gun owner rights and stop wasting taxpayer money. Some local governments who do not agree with DeSantis gun laws seek to pass local laws overriding DeSantis’ State laws.

Keep it up Governor! Continue making it easier for children and adults in Florida to be killed.

I love basketball. Especially college ball. Last night Men’s Final Four was outstanding! Joy was mine!

Connecticut and San Diego State vying for the national title. Best of the best.

Connecticut favored. Connecticut was the better team going into the game. The end result established it as a fact. Connecticut won 76-59.

Except for a run by San Diego State with 10 minutes left in the game, it was Connecticut all the way. In the last 10 minutes, San Diego brought Connecticut’s lead down to 7 or 8 points. A terrific run! I thought San Diego might pull it off. Was not to be, however.

Whatever, a great game! Played well by both sides.

Baseball season has begun. Pro ball. The Masters this week. There is much sports wise to keep us busy.

My problem is I am not particularly crazy about baseball. Watch very little, nor do I follow it. Basketball and golf my games. Golf will carry me till the late Fall and the return of basketball.

There is an open furor evident in Key West re the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority paying lifetime health benefits to top executives and their spouses. Those paying water bills, which includes just about everyone, consider the payed health benefit a misuse of funds. They also wish they had such a benefit from any source. I need not tell you health benefits are expensive.

The situation should be investigated. May be perfectly legal. If so, makes it even worse.

My day till after Trump’s appearance before the judge and then again tonight watching Trump’s talk from Mar-a-Lago will be spent glued to the TV set. Can’t help it. Love government, love politics.

Enjoy your day, whatever it may be!

TRUMP’S DEFENSE BEGINS: JUDGE HATES ME…..DISTRICT ATTORNEY BRAGG’S WIFE CALLS ME A RACIST

Trump’s defense has begun. He is complaining the judge “hates” me. Trump’s lawyer Joe Tacopina says no way.

Trump is concerned also about District Attorney Bragg’s wife who has rallied against him for years in tweets calling him a racist having a personal hatred for him and advocating his arrest.

Trump, his family and attorneys were caught off guard by the indictment. They expected it to be at least a month off yet.

Maggie Hagerman said, Trump was “extremely angry” and his family “rattled” following the indictment.

Bess Levin wrote, “Trump was basically one step away from throwing a ‘no indictment’ party.”

A Trump supporter was interviewed on TV over the weekend. She compared Trump to Jesus Christ during Holy Week. Intimating the suffering and crucifixion he would experience.

A crazy fanatic!

My pleasant weekend is over. Cathy returned to Seattle yesterday.

We had a pleasant dinner at the A & B Lobster House saturday night. Shared lobster and escargot, oysters rockefeller, and beef carpaccio appetizers followed by bananas foster for desert. Not bad!

Before taking Cathy to the airport sunday, we had breakfast at the Pier One Deck. Eggs benedict. We were on a roll.

Met a very nice group at the table next to us. Gina D’Angelo and her guests a nephew Vincent from Austin, Texas and best friend Melissa from I can’t recall where. Gina is from the Philadelphia area. She and her husband Jim have owned a condo at Truman Annex for years.

Gina is my kind of people. She has been a part of Key West for years and understands the changes that have occurred.

The conversation was great. I look forward to running into Gina again soon.

I ask Gina write a comment and share her e-mail or cell number. I have information that might help in cleaning her Mel Fisher coin which has gone black.

I watched the LSU / Iowa Ladies Final Four Championship game after I got Cathy to her plane. What a game!

LSU beat Iowa 102-85.

Great shooting by LSU. Especially, Jasmine Carson. She came off the bench in the first half. Her shooting was dynamite! She couldn’t miss! Everything went in! Took 7 shoots, made 7 shoots!

Even her final basket of the first half shone brightly. One second left on the clock. An Iowa player all over her guarding her well. She was way out beyond 3 point range. Threw the ball up in desperation. It went in!

When you’re hot, you’re hot!

The referees sucked. Only way to describe how they handled the game. Both sides suffered.

Tonight another great game. The Final Four Men’s Championship. Connecticut v. San Diego State at 9:15.

I am excited!

Enjoy your day!

THIS PUSSY GRABBED BACK

Apparently Trump does not leave his women smiling.

Stormy Daniels spoke out re Trump’s indictment during an interview with The Times of London. She said, “This pussy grabbed back.”

She is prepared to testify in Trump’s trial if called upon.

Trump jumped the gun when he erroneously predicted he would have been indicted tuesday.

Came wednesday and no indictment, Trump had nice words for the grand jury. On wednesday he wrote in Truth Social: “I have gained such respect for this grand jury and perhaps even the grand jury system as a whole…..The grand jury is saying, hold on, we are not a rubber stamp, which most grand juries are branded as being, we are not going to vote against a preponderance of of evidence or against large numbers of scholars all saying there is no case here.”

On thursday, Trump was indicted.

Bess Levin wrote: “Donald Trump was basically one step away from throwing a ‘no indictment’ party.”

She added: “The former President was reportedly so unconcerned about the prospect of being charged that he made jokes about it.”

The way I view it, Trump lives in a delusional self serving world. He is not the person to ever lead the U.S. again.

The Key West Citizen continues to be reduced in content and size. What follows is no April Fool’s joke.

Today’s edition contains no April Fool’s Day stories. The past is gone.

Adams Publishing Group, which now owns the Citizen, has a policy that prohibits the humorous page.

What can be said, except that it appears Adams Publishing lacks a sense of humor.

Our local newspaper becomes less and less, smaller and smaller, each year. Though more expensive.

A question of interest: Who owns the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority?

I have searched the internet. No luck in figuring out who.

History is preserved in strange ways. A “did you know on Facebook” re Lewis and Clark an example.

Lewis and Clark “brought mercury chloride with them on their expedition across the U.S. The mercury was consumed by the group. It swiftly passed through the human system. As a result, archaeologists have been able to find a trail by locating what is left of their makeshift latrines and testing the mercury content. More than a 100 years later, their footprints are overgrown, but their poop remains.”

Final Four begins tonight. Exciting basketball!

Enjoy your day!
