Kissing

Kissing has its moments. A pleasant experience. Quiet enjoyable.

Romantic kissing has had its detractors, however. Referred to occasionally as “kissing killjoys.”

The biggest romantic kissing killjoys are the Christians. Sex has always had an evil connotation of sorts in the Catholic Church. Pope Clement V in 1312 decreed sensuous kissing a mortal sin. “…kissing done with intent to fornicate is…a mortal sin.”

From Pope Clement V forward, the Catholic Church sought to ban romantic kissing. Just as some Christians of today would ban pleasurable sex.

The ban did not fly with the people. If anything, it gained in popularity.

May the pleasure always be with us.

What a game last night! The National College Championship game. TCU v. Georgia.

Georgia crushed TCU 65-7. The #2 team in the country TCU was no competition for the #1.

This is Georgia’s second consecutive year in winning the title of National Champions.

Stetson Bennett was Georgia’s quarterback. “Tom Brady” in every respect.

I mentioned my trip to Club Med 47 years ago in yesterday’s blog. The trip was spur of the moment on my part. I was elsewhere and had no Caribbean beach clothes with me. My intent was to purchase a summer/beach wardrobe at Club Med.

It was not necessary.

Forty or fifty years ago, mu mu’s were a popular female attire in the U.S. Long large billowy gowns. Neck to foot. Upon arriving at Club Med, I discovered that is what everyone wore when not in a bathing suit. Males and females alike. I purchased two. One multi blue, the other multi red. Plus a pair of sandals. I had none.

I was set for the week. Most went with nothing on beneath the mu mu. The mu mu was morning, afternoon and evening attire.

It was quite a trip.

Two former Florida Keys residents on the agenda this morning.

First, Ted Williams. One of America’s greatest baseball players.

Williams had a home in Islamorada. While a star player and for many years after in retirement. Williams was an avid fisherman. Islamorada is known as the Sport Fishing Capital of the World. Therein the reason Williams settled there. His home located bayside at mile marker 82.

He finally sold. The reason for selling a sad one. He said he sold when Islamorada became so busy he had to wait for traffic to subside before he could cross U.S. 1.

The other Williams is Tennessee Williams. A Key West resident for some 40 odd years. Few are aware the noted writer became a Catholic while living in Key West. He was baptized a Catholic at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Church where he became a regular communicant.

Kevin McCarthy got beyond his first possible hurdle last night when the House accepted the Rules the Republicans would be governed by. The same Rules whereby McCarthy sold his soul in order to be elected Speaker. Rules that in due course may bring him down.

I thought he would not get the necessary votes last night. He did. Only one Republican voted in opposition.

Mar-a-Lago is Tammany Hall reincarnated. It seems to be working hard to become a Mafia headquarters. Some are labeling it fascist. DeSantis’ Florida being labeled fascist leaning by some also.

Former Brazilian President Bolsonaro is living in the Orlando area. Sunday, Brazil had a January 6. Bolsonaro and Trump birds of a feather.

Bolsonaro got into the U.S. on a “Head of State” visa. He is no longer head of any state. Therefore the validity of his visa is in doubt.

Bolsonaro entered an Orlando hospital sunday or monday assuming because of what was happening in his country. It is felt he is involved. He was released yesterday. His complaint was an old stabbing wound acting up.

The U.S. government has taken no position on his legal status.

Enjoy your day!

BOB AND HELEN MARKS MARRIED 42 YEARS AGO IN -20 DEGREE WEATHER IN FALMOUTH, MAINE

Today marks the 42nd wedding anniversary of Bob and Helen Marks.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY BOB AND HELEN!

I remember the day well. As well as if it were my own anniversary.

The weather had a lot to do with it.

They were married in Falmouth, Maine. In the middle of the winter. It was minus 20 degrees. I left Utica for the wedding with a cold. Left Falmouth 24 hours later with pneumonia. Kidding, but damn close.

The wedding sentimental in nature. Helen wanted to be married in the same Lutheran church her parents had. Quant, small. She dressed as her mother had. She wore her mother’s suit and hat. Deep maroon.

Helen was lovely.

I was best man.

Bob Mazza drove me to Falmouth.

The wedding was in the evening. Following which we went to what I assume was a restaurant of historical significance. Quaint and small as the church had been. Probably constructed pre-Revolution. Outer walls merely clapboard.

The cold wind was howling. Blowing right through the clapboards. The head table was situated directly in front of one such wall. Our backs to it. I froze during dinner.

As Bob was driving me back the next morning, I thought I was going to die. I had a first class for real cold! Made a decision. I wanted sun. My plan was to burn the cold out of me. Told Bob to stop at the Boston airport. I was going to head out to a Caribbean island. He thought I was crazy. So did I. But, what the hell.

I had no beach wear. Only winter clothes for a 24 hour trip. I had a credit card, however.

In the airport, there was a booth advertising Club Med. Had never done one. Would not need many clothes, I thought. Why not.

I booked into the Club Med in Martinique. Plane was leaving in one hour. Bought a bathing suit while I was waiting.

Club Med was the perfect choice.

My first day I walked onto the beach. Received the cultural shock of my life! There were about 500 women. Topless! I couldn’t stop laughing.

Within 24 hours, the cold was gone. I felt terrific. Enjoyed the trip immensely. Did several more Club Meds over the years.

Bob and Helen worked for CNA. Both talented. Both ended up in major positions. Bob became Vice-President of CNA’s western division. Helen in charge of all asbestos cases in the U.S.

They retired to Las Vegas. A few years ago, moved to Cape Cod. The last time we were together was pre-COVID when they sailed through Key West. We enjoyed lunch at Louie’s Backyard.

It is good to get old. Better than the alternative as they say. However, we lose track/no longer see those we knew well in our younger day. I knew Bob for years before he even married Helen. I miss the friends of “my youth.”

I am a bit sentimental today. Learned yesterday that a close doctor friend of mine in Utica is dying from cancer. A matter of days. I shed a tear as I mention this. That is the way it is, however.

Bob and Helen, enjoy many more anniversaries! Together!

Bob, do me a favor. Please rerun the photo of the wedding party. I would like to share it with my readers who may never have seen it. I had hair then!

Big sport day yesterday. Football and golf.

Buffalo and New England. Great game. Especially for Buffalo who won decisively. One player on the specials team ran a kick off back twice to score. Once rarely happens. Twice in one game and by the same player, forget it! I hope Damar Hamlin was sedated as he watched the game from his hospital bed.

I was switching the dial back and forth on the TV. Watching the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

The conclusion I never contemplated. John Rahm won. It was impossible. He was 7 strokes behind when he started the day. Colin Morikawa had led for 54 holes. He was 6 strokes ahead of everyone else. He had not had a bogey in 54 holes. No way he was going to lose.

He did. He fell apart. A total collapse.

I could not believe it.

Rahm has been hot recently. He has won 3 of his last 6 starts.

A wild day ahead in the House of Representatives. I’m curious how the Rules get passed and what else will occur.

Brazil had its January 6 yesterday. Fascism on the move world wide. Trump somehow involved. Steve Bannon definitely.

Enjoy your day!

HAPPY WEDDING ANIVERSARY JEAN AND JOE THORNTON

Jean and Joe Thornton are the dearest of friends. Today, they celebrate their 51st wedding anniversary. Gold plus one. Blue sapphire to be precise.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY JEAN AND JOE!

They are two of the best friends I have made in my many years in Key West.

Initially Chart Room buddies. We became exceptionally close beginning with Hurricane Irma.

Jean and Joe were home in Birmingham as Irma approached. They were watching Irma’s approach as those of us who lived full time in Key West were. The spaghetti was scary. For days a straight line to Key West. Projected as a Category 5. No deviation. I knew I had to get my ass out of Dodge.

I left 5 days before Irma hit. My cautious nature at work. The game plan was to drive wherever would be safe. Weather reports advised Irma would come over the Keys and then run up the west coast of Florida. I opted to drive up the east coast. Put into Pompano the first night in a motel. Figured I was safe. Even the young lady at the registration desk thought Pompano would be safe. The motel was not busy.

The next morning around 5, I got a call. I was told I had to leave, the motel was closing down. Irma had changed course and was going to come up the east coast.

I checked the weather reports. Nothing appeared certain. East coast, west coast, center of the State. I decided to drive right up the middle of Florida on the Florida Turnpike. Keep driving that day as far as I could. Traffic was an abomination. Had been even on US 1 as I drove north out of the Keys. Move a mile or two in an hour and then 50-60 miles in an hour another time.

Needed gas. No gas. Another story for another time.

In any event, I drove straight north out of Florida into Georgia. Made it to Atlanta about midnight. Went to the big downtown Marriott. I had used Marriott for years, had their super duper card. Only 2 rooms left. Both suites. I think on the 47th floor. Not sure of the exact floor number, other than it was high.

Since I was a card holder, got the room for $135 a night. Good deal! The registration lady said they were full up because of the hurricane. Fortunately, it was not expected to reach Atlanta.

Spent two nights in the Marriott. Received an early morning call the third day. I was required to check out. The hotel was closing down. Irma on the way.

Where was I going to go? Decided to call Jean. She had said if I needed a place to stay, I could with her and Joe at their home in Birmingham. Jean said come hither, Louis. Several others and some dogs on their way also. I was on my way to Birmingham, Alabama.

I have left out of the story the minor inconveniences experienced just getting to Atlanta. Like gas was always a problem. A one to two hour wait. The bathroom another. I was at a rest area on the Florida Turnpike. Had to take a wicked piss. The line for the men’s room was like it always is for ladies. Long and ran to the outside of the building. In an hour, I moved about 10 feet, was still not in the building let alone the rest room, and my gut was ready to burst.

Screw this I thought. I went outside and walked over to a forest area to relieve myself. It was old home week. Men and women everywhere doing what I was.

Finally made it to Birmingham. The Thornton home lovely. In due course, 6 or 7 of us arrived. I was the first. Lucky. Got a large bedroom and bath.

All of us spent 11 or 12 days. Irma deviated at the last minute and hit Key West as a mere 1. It hooked back onto land 16 miles north at Cudjoe Key however as a 4 or 5.

The time as guests of the Thornton’s was wonderful, top shelf, the best, always made to feel welcome, etc.

We all did out own thing till 5 in the afternoon. Then it was 5 o’clock as it is 5 o’clock everywhere. Drinking time. The Thorntons have a large screened in porch on the rear of their home. That is where we began. A few drinks and some pickies. Dinner around 8-9. Around a large dining room table.

Joe and Jean are as loved in Birmingham as they are in Key West. Most evenings their friends and neighbors brought whole meals for all of us. Between we “guests” and Jean and Joe there were about 10 of us. The meals were ethnic denomination based. The whole meal. Cases of wine sometimes also.

Then we partied till 2-3 in the morning. Fun time!!!

There is a video floating around on the internet. It is of Jean and I jitterbugging around 3 in the morning. We did it all! Oh, what a time we had!

I was sorry to leave. We all were.

You didn’t leave right away once the hurricane had passed Key West. Can’t go back till there is electric power and water at the very least. So we stayed 11-12 days. My recollection is I left day 12. I was sorry to go. I honestly believe Jean and Joe were sorry to see us go.

I wrote a book about the experience. Titled it Irma and Me. It is available on Amazon. Cheap. Buy it if you want a blow by blow of my trip back and forth. From the moment I left to Key West till I return. Beside the stay at Jean and Joe’s, what I saw as I hit the Keys. Irma had left its mark everywhere.

Capsulating a couple of things as examples. Boats were on the highway, cars in the water, houses other that on their foundations. One thing I observed as I approached Islamorada on the return trip. A tree on my right as I drove down US 1. Sitting on some branches about 20 feet up, a large refrigerator laying on its side.

What a wind it must have been!

Enjoy your Sunday!

BEGINING THE DAY ON A HAPPY NOTE WITH MARK TWAIN

So much bad news. Demoralizing.

Decided to begin the blog with a few Mark Twain statements. Twain thought by many to be the greatest humorist America has produced. His comments words of wisdom.

It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.

The secret of getting ahead is getting started.

Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.

One of the most exciting occurrences this week has been Damar Hamlin’s steady recovery. A step at a time. God is good. Yesterday, he began breathing on his own.

I’m surprised. Find it hard to believe. Kevin McCarthy is Speaker!

How will it work out? Will he still be in the position in a year? Six months? Three months? How much “good legislation” will be produced during his time as Speaker?

There is a degree of democracy involved. Tainted from my perspective. Significant negotiation and compromise involved to achieve an end. McCarthy’s election as Speaker. Query: Good result? Time will tell.

Another shooting. A 6 year old shot his teacher in the chest. The shooting occurred yesterday at the Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia. The teacher’s condition remains life threatening. She is improving, however.

No other facts are available at the moment.

Cold outside. Bright sunshine. Nevertheless, cool. The cold wave began last night.

There has been a surge in migrants coming in boats to the Florida Keys. Over the New Year weekend, over 400 migrants arrived in the Dry Tortugas. A hop, skip and jump from Key West. Thursday, 45 more.

As much as I dislike DeSantis, I have to give him credit on this one. He didn’t waste time. He called out the National Guard yesterday. In a statement, DeSantis described the situation as an “alarming influx” of migrants.

The Dry Tortugas were closed during the week. It appears the National Guard assistance is expected to be rapid. It has been announced the Dry Tortugas will reopen at 8 sunday morning.

Syracuse/Virginia at 5 today. Syracuse the underdog. Sportscasters see Virginia winning by 2-10 points.

Syracuse has been gradually improving. The team has won 7 of its last 8 games. Hope the improvement results in a Syracuse victory!

Enjoy your day!

KEYS CITIZEN CONTINUES TO INSULT ITS READERS

Today is January 6. Two years ago today, the attack on the Capitol occurred. A day of consequence in American history. To be remembered and recalled at the least every January 6.

As should December 7.

Nothing less than front page news.

Unfortunately, out local newspaper the Keys Citizen does not appear to agree.

This past December 7, no front page article re Pearl Harbor. Two or four lines in The History section on page 2. A lengthy article buried deep in the paper. Something like page 8, though I cannot recall accurately the page number.

On this January 6, the insurrectionist attack on the Capitol has been similarly ignored on the Citizen’s front page. The Today in History portion on page 2 devoted several lines to the event. I could not find anything else, though an article might have been found deeper in its 20 odd pages. The Citizen is confusing once one gets through its first 3-4 pages.

Why does the Citizen ignore the presentation of major American events?

I do not believe it is because the powers to be do not care. Rather I suspect it is money. Key West has roughly 4 employees stationed here. The rest of the Citizen is put together up north somewhere.

Money should not be an excuse. How hard is it to write an historical piece. The facts are the same. Rarely change, unless there is a new development.

Today’s Citizen had 4 articles front page. Means they were considered the most important. They were that 427 Cuban migrants had completed processing at Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas, the photos and biographies of 2 of the several City Manager candidates, and the Mayor’s State of the City Address.

With the exception of the Mayor’s State of the City, the others could have been printed anywhere else. None of the 3 necessarily front page news. Room was available if those in control wanted to prepare and publish a piece involving January 6.

Keys Citizen: Time to get your act together! Do your job correctly! Stop cheating your customers!

Kevin McCarthy is doing well. He has gotten his ass beat 3 days in a row, Eleven votes and he lost all 11. How many more votes till he sees the handwriting on the wall. He does not have nor ever will have sufficient votes to win. He should withdraw and let the business of the people move on.

Embarrassed he will be. No question. However, he brought the pain upon himself.

Damar Hamlin is America’s newest hero. God bless him! The Lord must be watching over him. He has begun a slow recovery.

A class act. His first question when he came to: Did we win?

His football playing days are over. Should be. If he continues, he’s crazy. He can still enjoy his chosen profession as a coach. He will rise through the ranks rapidly.

I screwed up the Steve Thompson story about the Boat Bar yesterday. Sorry Steve, sorry one and all. In defense, Steve’s early years in Key West were exciting and successful. I got his successes muddled.

In the 1970’s, Steve had 3 taco stands in Key West. All successful. He was making money.

The Boat Bar was not next to the taco stand he owned across the street from Sloppy Joe’s. My mistake. It was located at 503 Duval. Across the street from the Kress building which became the home for years of Fast Buck Freddie’s. Next door at 501 Duval was the location of Steve’s taco stand I wrote about yesterday. It sat on the corner of Duval and Fleming. Today the home of Banana Republic.

Around the corner on Fleming was the West Key Bar. Yes, the West Key Bar. Not the Key West Bar.

I think I have it correct finally. Hopefully. It’s not always easy folks!

There is a great white shark swimming around the Seven Mile Bridge.

A lot known about the great white. Her name Sable. She was tagged last year by Ocreach. Ergo, she “pings.”

The last time Sable’s presence was noted was November. She was swimming off Cape Cod. She is now in the Keys having traveled down seeking warm waters.

Sable is 10 1/2 feet and weighs 800 pounds.

Syracuse/Virginia basketball tomorrow night at 5 pm. Virginia ranked #11, Syracuse unranked. Syracuse however has won 7 of its last 8 games. A Syracuse victory would place them in the top 25.

Too bad Dr. McIvor passed on. He was a Virginia grad. We would have been talking about the game this week.

Blood tests at the hospital yesterday afternoon. The Tampa doctor who performed the parathyroid surgery on me in July is doing some follow up work. Two calcium blood tests.

Enjoy your day!

LANDLORDS SUFFER FROM HIGH TENANT RENT LEVELS…..PARANOIA IN THE EXTREME

Landlords suffering from high tenant rents. Truly paranoia! Delusional! Bullshit pure and simple!

Yet on 12/9/22,  the British newspaper The Telegraph ran an article titled: Landlords Face Crisis As Tenants’ Rent Burden Reaches 10 Year High.

Landlords feeling the crisis???  Whether in Britain or the U.S., who is kidding who? The article’s title has to have been poor writing. An editing failure. Impossible to be believable.

Amazon announced yesterday it is laying off 18,000. Claims it needs to cut costs.

The cuts will primarily hit the corporate workforce. Warehouse workers will not be affected.

Amazon had recently announced the firing would be 10,000. However decided yesterday to increase it to 18,000.

As large as 18,000 sounds, it amounts to just a little more than one percent of Amazon’s 1.5 million employees.

What will today bring in the house Speakers vote? Will McCarthy survive another day?

The two sides fight each other. A group of 20 holding off the will of 201. Issues have nothing to do with anything that involves the good of the country.

McCarthy continues to give up Speaker power to win. If he succeeds, he will be powerless. An empty victory. One of no value. History will recognize it as such.

Bess Levin at it again. Recognizing what is bad. She published on 1/3, “Greene, Boebert, Gaetz: The Worst People You Know Are Having A Fight.”

She wrote: “There are a lot of awful people in the United States Congress, but it wouldn’t be hard to make the case that Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, and Matt Gaetz are among the very worst of the worst. Their awfulness usually binds them, but at present, the worst people in Washington are in a fight.” Greene is supporting McCarthy, Boebert and Gaetz are against him.

Must be McCarthy promised more to Greene that he could Boebert and Gaetz.

How the mighty fall! I refer to Rudy Giuliani. His world continues to collapse.

A New York woman has filed a sexual harassment claim against him. The accuser Nicolle Dunphy. She claims “Giuliani is a sexist sexual predator and abuser.”

The case was filed via a Summons in New York Supreme Court yesterday. It relates to activities which allegedly occurred from 2019-2021. She seeks $3.1 million.

Dunphy is representing herself. Strange in and of itself.

Next a report concerning a recent “article” in the Andy Borowitz Report. I know! It’s a satire! A spoof! I only err once. Worth reporting. A little humor never hurts.

Its title “Kari Lake Furious That  Some Liars Like George Santos, Got To Win And She Didn’t.”

With tongue in cheek, Borowitz wrote that Lake said, “Totally unfair” a liar such as George Santos got to win and she did not. “Shows that not all liars are treated equally in the U.S.” Further, “I spread some perfectly normal lies about my election being stolen, and I go down in flames.” Santos “claims he did everything but walk on the moon and invent the i.Phone, and he sails to victory. I don’t want to live in an America like that.”

The Boat Bar existed on Duval back in the 1970’s. It was across the street from Sloppy Joe’s. Steve’s Taco Stand stood next door to the Boat Bar.

Steve Thompson shares his recollections of the place.

The Boat Bar on Duval was well known in the seventies. The Taco Stand had to deal with their hookers and junkies. The Key West topless bar was on our other side. They all used our restrooms when they wanted to hide. Syringes and paper towels all over the place. The cleanup crew said it was disgusting to face.

There were fights almost every night.

Everyone came to the Taco Stand for a bite. We had a good crew and they handled it just fine. It was by far the best store of mine.

Enjoy your day!

THE PRESIDENT WHO SAVED FOOTBALL

I wrote this blog in 2015. From an historical perspective. Thought people would be interested in how violent football was considered at one time, how it was almost banned, etc. Its message bears a greater pertinence today because of Damar Hamlin. It is for that reason, I repeat it.

——————————

Football is as American as apple pie. Whether played professionally or collegiately. Negatives have developed in the game. Especially in the professional ranks. Brain concussions and deflated footballs.

The time is the turn of the century. Nineteen hundred five, give or take a few years either way. Professional football was not a fait accompli. Still in its formative stages. College football was king.

The game different back then. Brutal and violent. Rough. Fatalities and serious injuries common place. Football fields were described by many as killing fields.

Where not fatal, injuries consisted of wrenched spinal cords, crushed skulls, and broken ribs that pierced the heart.

In 1904, there were 18 deaths and 159 serious injuries. In the several years before, more than 100 had died. Football was a grinding bruising sport. Brute strength was required to move the ball forward. Players locked arms in forward movement and used their heads as battering rams.  No helmets, of course.

Tackles were gang style. A large number of defensive players ending up on the offensive ball carrier. The accumulated weight of the gang tackle estimated at one and a half tons.

Newspaper editorials called for an end to college football. Some college presidents disbanded their teams. Several state legislatures were considering making the game illegal.

Regardless of the dangers involved, college football was at its peak in popularity. Tens of thousands attended games. College football rivaled professional baseball.

President Theodore Roosevelt got involved. A Harvard graduate, he was never able to play football because of nearsightedness. He supported college football, however. It involved the strenuous life which Roosevelt advocated. The game made men.

Harvard had a bad time with football in 1894. A Harvard/Yale game. A blood bath! Harvard canceled football for two years.

Roosevelt was convinced that football was the proving field for the battlefield. Most of his Rough Riders were former college football players.

Roosevelt realized that violence had to end for football to survive. Play hard, but do not kill and maim players.

The President called a White House meeting on October 5, 1905. The head coaches of the country’s premier football teams attended. Harvard, Yale and Princeton. Roosevelt said in effect…..Ok guys, time to curb violence. The schools issued a statement condemning brutality and pledging to keep the game clean.

However, the 1905 season turned out to be worse fatality wise than 1904. There were 19 deaths and 137 serious injuries. Among them, the President’s son who played on the Harvard freshmen team. In a game against Yale, he suffered significant bruising and multiple nose fractures. That same day, a Union College halfback in a game against NYU was kicked in the head. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage.

Stanford and California switched to rugby after the 1905 season. Columbia, Northwestern and Duke dropped football. Harvard President Charles Eliot threatened that Harvard would be next.

Roosevelt did not think highly of Eliot. For reasons other than football. He thought Eliot was trying to emasculate the game.

Roosevelt was of the opinion that perhaps his October 1905 message had not been heard.  He called another meeting of school leaders. This time, the President put his foot down. Shape up was his message. Otherwise, he would lead the growing sentiment against college football. He ordered that they come up with radical rule changes to make the game safer.

The second conference was known as the Intercollegiate Conference, the forerunner of the NCAA. The group came out with significant game changing rules. The forward pass was legalized. Can you imagine! No forward pass till 1906.

The legendary coach John Heisman had long been an advocate of the forward pass. He thought it would open the game, thereby reducing dangerous mid field collisions.

Other new rules adopted included creating a neutral zone between offense and defense. Mass formations were abolished. First down distance was doubled from 5 yards to 10 yards. Three downs permitted.

Though approval was given to the forward pass, its use was restricted. The ball could not be passed to a receiver in the end zone. The ball could not be passed within five yards of center. An incomplete pass resulted in the opposing team getting the ball.

The New York Times called the forward pass idea radical.

Fatalities and injuries dropped dramatically in 1906 and 1907. The tables turned in 1909. Fatalities spiked. Another meeting, a non-White House one. More reforms. Restrictions on the forward pass eased.

College and professional football might not be part of society today were it not for Theodore Roosevelt. He saved football at a precarious time in its history.

Think how tough football is today. Injuries in every game. Yet, present day football compares in no way to that which existed in Roosevelt’s time. A more dangerous sport back then. Hard to believe!

Kevin McCarthy. A horse’s ass or political genius. I am inclined to believe the first. No way is he going to end up Speaker.

As a result of burning desire to be Speaker, he has brought to the forefront how dysfunctional the Republican Party is. If the Party cannot govern itself, how can it govern the country?

Chaos reigns in the House at the moment. My gut tells me whoever is elected Speaker, the chaos will continue for the next two years.

McCarthy has permitted himself to be humiliated. He has placed the Republican Party in a precarious position. He sold his soul for support and received nothing in return. He is Trump like in that in so doing he rejected decency.

His supporters and those opposing him are both working from a burn it all down rage.

Most of those he bought with promises have turned on him. Now monsters gobbling him up. He asked for it and is now getting it.

Two of the best people I have met over the years in Key West are Lynda and Bob Frechette. They beat COVID till last week. COVID 19 finally brought Lynda down on 12/28 and Bob 3 days later.

Return to health soon, my friends.

Historian Michael Beschloss appeared on Morning Joe this morning. He made an observation I could not substantiate thereafter anywhere on the internet. Perhaps too early for it to reach the print stage.

In any event, I share it. If I am wrong, I apologize in advance. Its subject matter too important not to share.

Beschloss said that funding for House security had been reduced. He could not understand why in view of January 6 and now the condition of the House yesterday and what it would be today. Intimating that so many people functioning in disarray as they were could be easy targets for some sort of attack.

Great game last night! Syracuse and Louisville are to be complimented. Syracuse beat Louisville in a squeaker 70-69.

Either team could have won.

Syracuse has now won 7 of its last 8 games.

Louisville was 2-12 coming into the game. Did not play like a team with such a poor record.

The last 8.2 seconds were wild! I have never seen such activity on a basketball court in such a short period of time. Frenetic best describes it.

Key West weather terrific yesterday and anticipated to be so today. In the low 80’s. Sun shining.

I stopped for lunch at Harpoon Harry’s. Their tuesday special has been on my mind the past few weeks. Lasagna. Best made by Harpoon Harry’s Mexican cook.

Enjoy your day!

DONALD TRUMP’S LONELY NEW YEAR’S EVE

Donald Trump’s New Year’s Eve was nowhere as grandiose as those of recent years. Even before his Presidency.

The “quality” of his guests tell the tale. A very limited number of “name” guests.

The most prominent person in attendance was Rudy Giuliani. Says it all! Number 2 was the My Pillow guy. And third, son Eric.

Son Donald Jr. and daughter Ivanka failed to attend.

The remainder of the guests Mar-a-Lago members.

Bess Levin says a Ron DeSantis Presidency would be as terrifying as a Trump.

Kevin McCarthy’s campaign for Speaker political prostitution at its best.

His failure on the first ballot, as is anticipated, will result in an unprecedented floor fight. The first in modern times. His failure to obtain the required 218 votes will leave the House in chaos for the next 2 years. Bad blood will remain.

His win on the first ballot will create a major problem for him if it occurs. He sold his soul to get the job. Clearly reflecting his inability to be a leader.

Hooray for the Ukrainians. On New Year’s day, they bombed a Russian stronghold located on Ukrainian soil. Depending on who is releasing the news, 63 or 400 Russians were killed. the Ukraines fired 4 rockets supplied them by the U.S. – HIMARS launchers.

The “kill” justified retribution. Proof that what goes around does come around. Vengeance in the finest sense.

Moscow is demanding punishment of the Russian commanders in charge of the area. Someone has to be held responsible!

A major sports tragedy occurred last night at the Bills/Bengals game in Cincinnati. Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest during the game. He made a tackle, got up and fell backward. Cardiac arrest. He received CPR and other appropriate treatment on the field and then was ambulanced off to a hospital.

He remains in critical condition.

The event occurred in the first quarter. The game was called at that point. Not completed.

The players from both teams kneeled together in prayer while Hamlin was being treated on the field. Many were crying.

Susan Neill has been a Key West friend for 20 years. She was Dr. McIvor’s assistant for the 20 years he was my heart doctor. I developed a close relationship with both.

Dr. McIvor died a year ago. Susan was sickly during his last year. After his death, her condition went into a dramatically downward spiral. She ended up in a hospital in northern Florida.

We kept in contact. With diminished frequency. Then nothing. I assumed my unanswered calls meant she had died. The last time we actually talked was prior to my parathyroid surgery in July.

For some reason, she was frequently on  my mind this past week. Yesterday, I received a telephone call from her. She was alive! Sounded well. Attitude good. Where had I been she wanted to know. I told her of “her death.”

Susan has recovered. Now, retired. Is moving today with her son and his family to Maryland where she will live with them.

Best news I received over the holidays! I definitely will keep in contact, as will she.

My eyes are tearful. Hearing from Susan is a God is good thing. I never expected it.

Syracuse/Louisville basketball tonight at 7 pm.

Syracuse should win. Never know, however. Louisville is 2-12 for the season and 0-3 in the ACC. Syracuse 9-5 and 2-1.

Enjoy your day! I wish each of you a Susan Neill type call!

Flora’s Story

I published Flora’s story for the first time August 26, 2013 on one of my stays on the Greek isle of  Amorgos. A true to life tale reflecting on how well most of us have it. If you do not agree, complain not. For if you do, Flora’s story will put you to shame.

Who is Flora?

She is the cleaning lady in the pensione I am staying in on Amorgos. She cleans my apartment and every other apartment in the
complex once a day. I do not know the exact number of apartments. The building is four stories high and wide, built into a
mountain.

She cleans toilets, washes the floors, changes the sheets and otherwise keeps each apartment neat and tidy. Seven days a week.
Eight to nine hours day. For three straight months. Not for $25 an hour. For 4 Euros an hour. Six dollars American money.

Flora speaks excellent English. Also, Albanian and Italian.

Flora resides in Albania. She has lived in Albania all her life. She is 41 years old. Single, never married.

Albania is a small country in southeastern Europe. Greece borders Albania to the south.

Albania has an interesting history.

Until 1991, Albania was socialistic. A Communist nation. Being small, it thought it needed the protection of a great power. First,
it was in a protectorate of China. Then Russia and Yugoslavia. Following the fall of Communist Russia, Albania became a
democracy. A parliamentary democracy.

The language is Albanian. The country is considered a top ten place for visitors.

Religion is a strange combination. Fifty seven per cent are Muslims, seventeen per cent Christians. Only forty per cent pay
attention to their religion, however. Albania is ranked the 13th least religious country in the world.

Russia is primarily responsible for the lack of religious fervor. When Russia took over Albania following World War II, it banned
religion. All religion. As a result, Albania acquired the distinction of being the world’s first atheist state.

Today’s Muslims and Christians get along well. Tranquility exists between them. Many Muslims are Muslims only because
their ancestors became Muslims during the 500 years Turkey controlled Albania. Muslims and Christians intermarry. No
problem. Muslim husbands neither dominate nor mistreat their wives as in most other Muslim countries. The partners to the
marriage are equal and treat each other accordingly.

When Russia initially took over Albania, the illiteracy rate was 85 per cent. Russia initiated immediate steps to correct the
problem. Within 12 years, the rate was corrected dramatically. Today, 98.7 per cent of the people are literate.

Health care is a problem in today’s Albania. A national health program does not exist. Under Russia’s domination, everyone had
health care. Today, few. If a person has not money to pay, doctors and hospitals will not provide treatment.

There is very little HIV-AIDS in Albania. Less than 100 cases.

I thought a little Albanian background would be helpful in understanding Flora’s life.

Now to Flora.

Flora grew up under the Communist system. Her father died when she was seven years old. As indicated, Russia made Albanians
literate. Education was important.

Flora was a good student. Russia would look at a student’s record and decide what that student would be in later life. Doctor,
lawyer or Indian chief, so to speak. It was determined when Flora was 10 years old that her talents were best accommodated if
she became either a teacher or nurse. Teaching became the choice.

High school in Albania is eight years. At age 18, Flora graduated. High school can be described as a professional school. Flora at
18 upon graduation from high school was qualified to be a teacher. She immediately was assigned to a school and started
teaching.

She continued her education at the university level. Her college degree did not affect her earnings significantly. She earned just a
bit more after acquiring her degree. Money was not an issue for her. It was the security of the job. Albanians are put into a mold
and can expect job security throughout their lives. Money, no.

Flora teaches third class. Notice, not grade. Our grades are their classes.

Russia’s drive to eliminate illiteracy obviously helped Flora. Without it, she would not have acquired an education nor have
become a teacher.

Without a father, Flora has been her own decision maker in life.

Flora lived under Communism her first 20 years. She says Communism was no good. She and her family, everyone, did not have
enough food or clothes. Things have been considerably better under a democratic form of government.

Flora presently earns 300 Euros a month as a teacher. Her salary continues through the three summer months when school is
closed. Though she says it is not enough, she considers herself middle class. I suspect because she is a teacher.

Twelve years ago, she bought a house. A small one. One bedroom, a small kitchen, a living room area, and a very small
bathroom. No tub. Just a shower. She borrowed money from friends to purchase the home. The mortgage was recently paid in
full. She now owns her home free and clear.

She related it was not easy to make the mortgage payments. Her first year as a homeowner, she was earning only 190 Euros a
month teaching. The house was important to her and she sacrificed. She claims, and I believe her, that she ate only beans for a
whole year. She could not purchase even a quart of milk.

She has been working summers to help pay off the house. Now that the house is paid, she works summers to renovate it. New
windows, new doors and the like.

Her home is everything to her. She describes it as “…..the most beautiful place in the world.” She says, “I find peace in my
house.”

Simplicity best describes the previous paragraph. It also reflects well on the state of her soul.

She is glad to have summer employment on Amorgos. It is hard work as she describes it, however. She works long days. Earns
four Euros an hour. Her employer pays half her rent. Flora does not live in the pensione complex. She rents a room elsewhere.
She describes it as dingy. But it works for her.

Her share of the rent is 90 Euros a month. She also pays the utility bills. Her employer provides her with lunch each day. That is
all Flora eats. She buys no other food. She does not go out after work. She saves every penny. Her sole source of enjoyment
is viewing the ocean. She claims in the absence from her home, it gives her peace.

Flora is obviously on a mission. Her home. To put together enough monies for its renovation.

Flora’s widowed mother is 76. She lives with Flora. They share the same bed.

Medical is a major concern. Flora puts some money aside to pay doctor and hospital bills in the event her mother becomes ill. As
she put it, “…..if you have no money, you die.” No medical attention is available without money up front.

Interestingly, Albania provides her mother with a pension. Sixty Euros a month. Ten of those Euros are retained by the
government to cover the mother’s prescription drugs. Her mom has a bad heart.

She would like a husband. She stated it in no uncertain terms. “I want a husband!”

I was curious as to what she was looking for in a man. She is 41 and still unmarried. By the way, Flora is an extremely beautiful
woman. Looks 30. Thin. The face of an angel. Magnificent eyes.

Flora says money is not important in her selection of a husband. She prefers “…..a good boy…..a good person…..one who works.”

Do you go out evenings and try to meet a man. “No, no!” she responded. She never goes out evenings. I am not sure if it was
because she did not want to be considered a bad girl or could not afford it. Her sole out of the house activity besides teaching was
coffee in the afternoon with female friends.

Her best friend is a 20 year old niece.

I inquired what she liked to do best for pleasure. Dance was her response. If you do not go out evenings, how do you dance? At
parties. How often do you attend parties? Two times a year. Teacher parties.

Teaching gives her the next best pleasure. Especially students who may be handicapped in some fashion. She presently has a boy
who cannot hear well, but has the ability to speak. She has another boy who is mentally slow. She works extra time with them
both.

Flora claims there is a benefit to her summer jobs. She gets to travel, to see the world. Last year, it was Italy. This year Amorgos.
She considers Amorgos “…..a wonderful place.” She believes that people on Amorgos live better than she does in Albania.

Her health is good. She tries to take care of herself. There is no money for medical attention were she to get sick. I asked about
yearly check ups, she laughed. What check ups?

I asked this simple woman what she would like to have that she does not. Her answer came quick. “A car!” She “…..dreams to
have one.” She walks everywhere, even to work. If the trip is too far, there are buses. Small vans.

I asked about vacations. She responded, “For poor people winter is all year, there is no summer.”

The cleaning job is the most difficult she has had. She has to move swiftly to get all the rooms cleaned. The hours are long. She is
tired all the time.

I was curious how she got to Amorgos from Albania. First a 16 hour bus ride and then a big ship. The trip took three days. Not
bad, she said.

Besides a car, what else would make her happy? To only work one job with more pay. She went on to point out that the money
here in Amorgos was better than her previous summer employment in Albania. In her home country, she worked every day in the
summers for three months from six in the morning to midnight. For 150 Euros a month!

Teaching hours are not bad. She teaches four hours in the morning. Then is expected to spend three hours at home in the
afternoon preparing for the next day. However, she has been teaching third grade for over 20 years and so preparation does not
consume that much time.

She told me prices in Albania were no different than on Amorgos.

She neither drinks nor smokes, except for an occasional wine at those two teacher parties a year.

Her English is self taught. She wanted to learn. Started with children’s books and worked her way up. She speaks and writes the
language well.

Her home town is called Rubik. She tells me it is large. Four thousand people.

Such is Flora’s story. She has less and wants more. A universal desire. She is working toward her goals. She will attain most of
them, if not all. I wish her a car, a husband, and good health at the very least.

Americans as a whole have more than most of their brethren worldwide. Flora is an example. We complain. Some of us do have
less than others. Some very little.

In the overall picture of things, Flora makes up for less with hard work. There are no social agencies, welfare, governmental help
or Stephanie Kaples for her. She continues without complaint.

We could learn from her.

TRUTH vs. LITERARY LICENSE…..HOW ISRAEL BISSELL WAS CHEATED

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

On the first day of 2023, I print the truth. An historical correction.

Listen, my children, / And you shall hear / Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere.

The distinguished American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow made Paul Revere famous when he penned the above opening lines to his famous poem.

One problem, however. It was not Paul Revere who was the hero in 1775 at the time the first shots were fired at Lexington which marked the beginning of the Revolution. It was Israel Bissell. Historians suspect that Longfellow took a bit of literary license. Bissell did not rhyme as well as Revere.

Paul Revere did make a ride that day. Several men did. Historians conclude Revere only rode somewhere between 1.5 and 20 miles shouting….. To arms, to arms, the British are coming.

Israel Bissell rode 345 miles. The trip took 4 days and 6 hours. He rode from Watertown, Massachusetts to Philadelphia. The trip was over the Old Post Road.

Longfellow apparently took further literary license with the actual words Bissell shouted…..To arms, to arms, the war has begun. Again for rhyming purposes.

Bissell carried with him a message from the colonists’ General Joseph Palmer. The message told of the Lexington attack and what the colonists should do to prepare for the British invasion. The message also stated that its bearer, Israel Bissell, was charged with alarming the citizenry. He was to be given fresh horses along the way as needed.

Bissell rode two horses to their deaths on the four day trip. His first horse died 2.5 hours into the trip at Worcester. A second died further along the way.

Every community Bissell passed through rang Church bells and fired muskets. Many colonists supported a war with the British and were happy to know it had begun.

In the 1950s, two columnists writing for the Berkshire Eagle wrote poems finally giving Bissell credit for the ride. Gerard Chapman and Clay Perry.

Chapman’s poem was appropriately titled Israel Bissell’s Ride. Certain lines read as follows.

Listen, my children, and you shall hear / Of Israel Bissell’s yesteryear: / A port less patriot whose fame , I fear, / Was eclipsed by that of Paul Revere…..

Perry’s poem was titled I. Bissell’s Ride. Certain lines from the poem read as follows.

Listen, my children, to my epistle / Of the long, long ride of Israel Bissell, / Who outrode Paul by miles and time / But didn’t make a poet’s rhyme…

Two questions arose over the years having to do with Bissell.

The first is whether he actually made it to Philadelphia. Documents from the time indicate an Issac Bissell who only rode to Hartford. He stayed in Hartford. He did not continue the ride. He was a less than an honorable man. He billed the new United States government for a six day stay in Hartford.

Historian Lion G. Miles came up with the story. He found his information in only one source. The Massachusetts Archives. All other historians and documents disagree with Miles. Issac was not Israel.

The other issue that arose was whether Israel Bissell was of the Jewish faith. I was amazed at how much time and effort was spent to arrive at a definitive conclusion. Israel Bissell was not Jewish.

A few historians believe that Bissell’s ancestry was of a Norman French / Swiss source. The majority however concluded that Bissell was part of the Byshelle family who in 1639 left Birmingham, England. The family was part of a Puritan group. All Bissell’s were determined to have been descended from the Byshelles.

I suspect Bissell’s first name Israel is what caused the inquiries. Historians discussing the Bissell issue pointed out that most children born in the colonies in the 17th and 18th centuries were given Biblical names.

So goes the story of Israel Bissell. A man almost forgotten not by history, but by poetry.

Early last night, I was seated in my wing back watching television. I fell asleep. It was seven o’clock. Never even had dinner.

I woke at 11:57. The lord was with me. Timely for New Years Eve. I watched New Years come in on TV. Great shows!

Did not fall asleep till 3. A screwed up night. Up again this morning at 6:30.

Before this day is out, I’m going to feel like I was out partying all night!

New Years Eve in Key West 1976. The New Year celebration was marked by violence. Police and merry makers clashed. Fire hoses and tear gas were used to disperse the crowd. One hundred fourteen arrested, eight injured.

On this day in 1997, former President Jimmy Carter and family welcomed the New Year at The Little White House.

I recall a few years later, Howard Livingston told me about two other New Years Eves and President Carter. Howard lived on Summerland Key. He shared that Carter and his wife spent the holiday a few doors down at a friend’s home on Howard’s street.

There’s something in the Keys that modern day Presidents have found appealing.

One hundred three years later, the Casa Marina still stands. In all its glory!

The Casa Marina Hotel opened this day in 1921. It would remain open till April 1. The larger hotels were not kept open all year back then. Only during “the season.”

Syracuse beat Boston College in basketball yesterday afternoon 79-65.

Syracuse played better than it has been. Still not where it should be. The team is now into the ACC season. Syracuse will have to improve as it plays its way into its schedule.

Syracuse is now 9-5 overall and 2-1 in its ACC ranking.

Enjoy your day!
