Son in law Corey Malcom is Director of Archeology at the Mel Fisher Museum. He has been at the Museum for over 25 years. His life is the ocean and that which exists beneath its surface.

Turtles were once a big business in Key West. There was a turtle factory on the docks near the present Turtle Kraal Restaurant.

Either the turtle population diminished or interest in turtle as a food diminished. In any event, the turtle factory ceased as such many years ago. At one time in recent years, a rough sort of turtle mueum was at the site. Recently there has been nothing. Just an empty building.

The remaining factory structure is not too large. About 20 feet by 50 feet. Four sides of shake shingle wood with a roof. Four windows. Sits on a dock over the water.

Mel Fisher Museum has agreed to lease the old turtle factory building for 5 years. A new turtle mueum will be opened. Corey will be responsible for its operation.

Last night Corey held a gathering at the site of the new turtle museum. The whole world turned out! Over 200 people. They could not all fit into that 50 x 20 structure at one time. So a second show had to be scheduled for 2 hours after the first.

The building was packed! Like sardines in a can! And hot! Remember only 4 windows. And humid as hell outside besides!

As the evening progressed, the water was running off me! My shirt was soaking wet at the end. I had to have lost 5 pounds!

However, the event was terrific! Worth suffering through!

Besides turtle turtle talk last night, Corey was excited about a movie he had discovered and after much anguish was able tobtain a copy of for showing.

The movie was Carib Gold. Made in 1955. Had to do with shrimp fishing in Key West at time.

In his comments leading up to the movie, Corey said the film was probably the worst edited film he had ever seen. He was correct! What a mess! It may also be the worst movie overall ever made.

However, the movie was made in Key West and showed Key West as it was in 1955. And that was its importance.

Nothing much has changed much from 1955 till today. Other than Key West is now larger.

There was Sloppy Joe’s, Duval Street, the Strand Theatre, the Harbor, Fleming Street. Interesting to see.

The film had quite a cast.

Etherl Waters starred. She was a big time black actress and blues and jazz singer. She has been dead at least 30 years now. A large heavy set woman with white hair. She received a 1949 Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in Pinky. Some of you might remember her as Beaulah the house kepper in the famous TV show of long ago.

Cicely Tyson was in the movie, also. Her first! She had a supporting role. She was 22 at the time. Now, 76. Tyson also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In 1972 for her performance in Sounder.

The actor who excited me the most was Coley Wallace! I recognized him immediately when I saw his face.

Wallace played Joe Louis in a film about Louis’ life made in the 1950s. He looks just like Joe Louis!

Coley Wallace had somewhat of an interesting carreer both in sports and acting.

He was an amateur boxer. Perfect to play Joe Louis! He also boxed Rocky Marciano for real at one time in his career. Marciano subsequently became one of the biggest and most popular heavyweight champions.

However, before Marciano boxed professinally, he was an amateur. As an amateur, he made it to the finals of the New York Golden Glove Tournament. And guess who he fought? Yes, Coley Wallace! And Wallace beat the future world champion in a three rounder!

Wallace was in another big hit movie boxing film. Raging Bull. The story of Jake La Motta. Robert di Niro played La motta. Wallace played the famous French fighter Marcel Cerdan.

Such was my night last night! A good one! Except for the heat, of course!

When I left, I went straight to the first bar I could find. Not for booze! For water! I was dehydrated!

Have good day! Do something nice for some one!

Good mornig!

I slept late!

It is after 8!

Another beautiful Key West day!

Most mornings I am up while it is still dark. As I write the blog, the day begins. Not today. The day is up in all its glory!

Obama is on television. He is speaking from Italy. He better return home! The wolves are nipping at his heels and the vultures are swooping! The next few months are going to require Obama the Politician. Energy and health care are two vital issues important to this country. It is going to require all of his talents to get these programs passed.

I watch Obama and I wonder why any one would want to be President. I have also had this thought with previous Presidents. So many issues. So many problems. How does any one handle all of them?

Obama’s plate is full! It is spilling over!

Pleasant lunch yesterday. Sean and I went to Hogfish. Great place! A Florida keys place! Thatched roof! Open air! Shrimp boats in the background!

What a place for lunch! What a life!

Last night Sean was at the Chart Room. With his mother Mary who is visiting. A nice lady! We did a round table with Marty, Captain Peter and several others.

Marty took me out for my birthday last night. I wanted to go to Kelley’s. I heard they had a Thursday night Maine lobster special for $19.95. And so we went.

What a great meal! 1 1/4 pound lobster, salt potatoes, corn on the cob.

I have not had Maine lobster in 3 years. I like it so much better than Florida lobster. Florida lobster tends to be tougher and lacking in taste. It has to be dressed up when cooked. Whereas Maine lobster merely boiled/steamed is tender and sweet.

Lovely Erica and Chris bartending. Bob having a drink at the bar.

Kelley’s is a pleasant Key West atmosphere.

Ironically I woke in the middle of the night. Had trouble going back to sleep. Flipped on the TV. There was Kelley Mc Gillis of Top Gun fame!

Kelley was a top movie star in the ’80s and 90’s. She still does an occasional film.

Fred Tillman presntly owns Kelley’s Restaurant. Fred and Kelley Mc Gillis were married during Kelley’s big time star film days. They lived in Key West! Opened Kelley’s Rerstaurant. Bought another restaurant. Then they divorced. Fred got the restaurants. Kelley moved to Pennsylvannia.

While they both lived here, they were both a part of the community. I recall attending many functions and parties with them.

Another part of interesting Key West lore!

Enjoy your day!

Golf yesterday!

Only Yankee Jack and I showed up. From 10-12 players, we are down to 2. It is Summer!

Yankee is a bull of a man! A four hundred pounder! And the nicest guy in the world!

He was tired after the first hole. Beat!

Turns out Yankee had surgery last Wednesday. He was in the hospital for 3 days. It was too early for him to be on the golf course! Especially in the hot humid summer weather. Our tee shirts were soaked by the end of the first hole.

Yankee lasted 8 holes. He was getting weaker and weaker. I told him not to pass out! No way I could pick him up!

We quit at the end of 8. I was ahead. Of course! I can always beat the sick, sore, lame and disabled! Won $4! Yankee insisted I take it.

So I was home early. I did not want to play alone.

I hopped in the pool for about an hour. Swam laps. I need it!

I had a sandwich out by the pool. And then a nap. Love to nap!

Marty was at the Chart Room last night. We had a couple of drinks. Then across the street to the Hot Tin Roof for dinner.

Met an interesting couple at the bar. Brian and Aimee. They have lived in Key West for 3 years. Hail from Michigan originally!

We chatted a long time. Nice people.

Brian works for the County Attorney’s office. He is part of the support staff. Aimee is at the Conch Guest house on Truman Avenue, across the street from St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Aimee claims the banana bread they make for their guests’ breakfast is outstanding! She invited me to stop over some morning at 8 to enjoy! I will!

I imbibed a bit too much last night. Slightly hung over this morning. I hate paying for my sins!

Key West weather this time of the year is the best! Warm and humid by day. Cool in the evening. I drove with the convertible top down last night.

The sun is already up this morning. A slight breeze. That lone palm tree outside my window swaying ever so slightly. The water creeping along.

Another good day in the making!

Have a good day!

Yesterday was a good day! A Louis day!

I went to the beach. Fort Zachrey Taylor Beach.

Threw down a beach chair and contemplated my navel.

The weather was perfect. Sun shinning. A slight breeze off the ocean.

The water was bath warm. Actually refreshing. There must have been a lot of salt in the water. I was able to float on my back with absolutely no effort. So float I did.

At one point I layed the back of my sand chair down and fell asleep. For about an hour. A good sleep.

Then home for a quick shower. And another nap on the cool sheets.

Last night I hit the Chart Room first. To my dismay, none of my friends were there. Why, I do not know. I felt sad.

After a couple of solitary drinks, I sauntered over to Sloppy Joe’s for dinner. Sloppy fries again! This time however I did not enjoy the band. That loud schreeching singing. After my time.

I had one more stop in me. Irish Kevin’s. Love Irish Kevin’s. Get there rarely, however.

I was in the mood for something special. So I had a shot of Patron’s Silver tequila followed by a bite into a slice of lime. It did the trick!

The entertainment was funny! Women were showing their bare breasts for a free Irish Kevin tee shirt. A lot of free tee shirts were given away!

Funny, women don’t seem to wear bras these days. At least under a tee shirt!

Such was my day. A good day! A very good day!

This morning golf! I have not played in two weeks. I am excited. I enjoy golf and the people with whom I play. Always a fun time, even if my play is lousy!

Enjoy your day!

Yesterday was my birthday. What a day!

Congrats on the blog, on other internet sites, over the telephone, in person. Out of sight! I never received so much attention before. That is not correct. There was one time. My 60th! A surprise party with 200 people.

Yesterday was better though. Unplanned. Uninvited. Unsolicited. People just communicated! It made me feel good. Thank you!

And where the messages came from! South Africa, India, Italy, Greece. England, Canada and Mexico! And from all over the US, including Florida of course, and New Hamphire, New York, Ohio, Virginia, South Carolina, Pennsylvannia, Michigan, Nevada and California.

One e mail was from Tom and Cindy. We have never met. Apparently they read the blog. Tom wrote and told me Cindy only has one leg. She rides a wheel chair. He said to watch out for them. They return to Key West in February for 2 weeks. I will be scouring Duval in search for them!

More importantly, it was Cindy’s birthday yesterday. We share the same day! However Cindy is a spring chicken compared to me. Only 52! Belated birthday greetings Cindy!

These electronic birthday cards are terrific, also! I received several. All good! The best however was from friend Allen Wimer. A clip of young lovely cheerleaders singing something to the effect that …You’re old!”

Funny! Great! Only Allen knows how to hurt a person and make them feel good at the same time! Thank you, Allen!

I celebrated my birthday at The Strip House last night. Sounds sexy! Was! But not as you might think!

The Strip House is a steak house in the Reach Hotel. Strip, steak–they go together. Its location at the Reach is one of the best in town. Picture a large veranda porch sitting on the ocean. I dined on the veranda, of course.

It was a perfect evening for it. Full moon. Soft breeze.

I thank every one who took me out to dinner last night. I had a terrific time!

Enough of birthdays! At least mine! Others are still fair game.

I return to normalcy today. I have some paper work to complete this morning. Then a 10 day project will be concluded and I can return to my nomal Key West existence of goofing off!

Have a good day!

Today is special.

It is my birthday.

74!

Wow!

Time moves on. Seems like just yesterday I was a kid.

The body ages a bit more each year. Have to watch out for it and take care of it.

The mind on the other hand seems to stay the same. I am still 35 in my head!

We celebrated the occasion last night with dinner at Lisa’s.

Lisa cooked a great meal. For me! Love her! My favorite foods. Fish, pasta and greens. And baked a cake, also. Chocolate with a white frosting. Another favorite!

Robert and Ally were all excited. They dressed for the occasion. Robert look like such a man in his sport shirt. Ally wore a dress. A lovely lady in the making!

They each hand painted cards for me. I hung them immediately on returning home on my kitchen wall. There was also a long sign on Lisa’s wall saying Happy Birthday Papa!

Lisa and Corey gave me one of those electronic picture frames. Age comes into play here. I do not know what it is called. But you load it with about 250 pics, plug it in and they play. One after the other. Lisa and Corey loaded it with photos of the grandkids and themselves. A great gift!

The candles were lit. Happy birthday was sung with Robert and Ally sitting on my lap. They helped me blow out the candles!

I enjoyed the evening. I enjoyed my Key West family. Thank you Lisa for loving me so much!

May I be here for 75 next year! And may all of you be with me, also!

Today is the real day. What will I do? We shall see!

Have a drink to me some time today! I will think of you all when I tip the first one tonight!

What a party!

Hospice throws a fund raising party on July 4th every year. The event is held on the grounds of the Casa Marina. The Casa is a hop, skip and jump from the White Street Pier where the fire works occur.

The beach at the Casa is a perfect spot from which to watch the fireworks!

I arrived about 7:30. First time I ever attended the event. I went especially to be with Corey, Lisa and the grandkids. Robert and Alley have been talking about the fire works for days.

Glad I did!

A big Fourth of July party! Hamburgs, hot dogs, salads, corn on the cob, ice cream, pop corn and I don’t know what else! All you wanted! A band playing. Friend Skipper leading the band!

People meandering around. Friends meeting. A lot of chatter.

And little kids running all over the place.

I finally found Corey and Lisa. No grandkids, however. Where are they, I asked. Lisa pointed to the far end of the beach. Robert and Ally had met friends and made new friends. They were running and playing. There were trampolines and slides for the kids.

I ate, talked, observed people and generally enjoyed myself.

We watched the fireworks sitting on one of those small pontoon sailboats on the beach. Just inches from the water.

The fire works were spectacular! Much better than I was accustomed to up north. Every one was oohing and ahing! Robert and Alley included!

The only drawback to the evening was the humidity. Hot! Thick! No breeze!

Hard to breath some times. My shirt was soaking wet. Sticking to me.

In the middle of the fire works, I had had it! I told Lisa I am going home and collapse on clean cool sheets in an air conditioned bed room!

I had to park my car a few blocks away from the Casa Marina. It was less warm as I walked. There was a slight breeze coming from the gulf side of the island. The Casa is located on the Atlantic side and the hotel iteself blocked the gulf breeze from the party people assembled on the beach.

People were standing on the streets watching the fireworks.

As I was stumbling along to my car, I heard a loud, “Hello Louis!”

It was Barbara Grob. A friend. Owner of the Key West Art Bar. She ran over to hug and give me a kiss. She was dressed magnificently. A blouse, long skirt and jewelry. Since she was watching the fire works from a vantage point where the gulf breeze hit her, she was appeared all fresh and crispy. As opposed to me who was still sweating and in a wet rumpled shirt.

I tried to push her away, saying I’m soaking wet. She didn’t care. Said so. And gave me a warm hug and kiss.

A nice lady!

I did make it home to my air conditioned room and cool bed. Which I immediately collapsed into! I wanted to watch the Boston Pops July 4 show. My cable service did not have it. So I ended up watching something from Washington, DC. Good, but no where as good as the Boston Pops!

I woke up feeeling heavy this morning! Like I had drunk a lot last night! The problem is I did not have even have one drink. Must be the humidity knocked the hell out of me and I am still feeling it even after a good night’s sleep.

It is Sunday. I am going to go buy the papers and find somewhere to sit for a while and enjoy some ham and eggs.

Why not!

Happy 4th of July!

America celebrates today! Cookouts, parades and the like! Very American!

Tonight there is a Hospice fund raiser at the Casa Marina. Apparently it is an annual event on this day. Hot dogs, hamburgers and then the fire works!

I have never attended. Lisa always goes and takes the grandkids. Tonight I am going to join them. Hopefully, Ally will hold my hand when the fire works go off so I won’t be scared! Ho ho!

Yesterday was a long one. Did paper work all day. I am in the midst of a project I have to finish.

In the evening, I was too tired to do much. So I just popped into the Chart Room for a couple of drinks. Talked at length with Captain Peter. A most interesting person! A world traveler. Adventurer a more apt description. Some interesting stories. Not appropriate yet for sharing, however. Perhaps another day.

So Sarah Palin no longer wants to be Governor of Alaska!

Good for Alaska. Bad for the rest of us. She will be in our faces big time between now and the
2012 election.

I was not impressed with her when she ran for Vice President. Did not think she was Presidential timber. I perceived her to be a less than competent individual who lucked out in becoming Governor and then lucked out even further when Mc Cain picked her. I view her as a fringe person.

Anyhow…..now she will be free to get rich! She is writing a book which is bound to be a best seller. Also she will be able to receive huge speaking fees. Plus whatever else! A TV or radio talk show?

Before any of you think I am anti female, pleae don’t. Far from it! However Palin is not a Hillary Clinton.

Sometimes I think we should go through a period when we only have leaders of the female gender. Men and women are wired differently! A term of women only might be just what the world needs to correct itself!

I’m off for an early morning swim. Enjoy your day!

Key West weather continues to be great! Sunshine all over the place!

The July 4th holiday weekend is upon us. The town is filling. I could feel it on Duval last night. Happy tourists all over the place.

This is a good time to visit the keys. Everything is cheap! Lodging and food reduced! It’s off season!

I had a quiet lunch yesterday at the Yacht Club and read the papers. Then to Borders to read a bit. Still working through Richard Wolfe’s Renegade about the Obama campaign.

Lisa stopped by after work with the grandkids. Robert and Ally are getting big. Each day one of them seems to grow a bit.

My evening started as usual at the Chart Room. A good place to start a Key West night.

There were quite a few people at the bar. I spent most of my time chatting with Captain Peter and Sean. We zeroed in on 2 topics. The local school board problems and the Catholic Church’s sex issues.

I have had this craving the past few days for chicken wings. The best place for them is Kelley’s. So I walked over to Kelley’s. That is when I could sense the growing holiday crowd on Duval.

Sat at the outside bar. Bob was there. He has been a Key Wester for years. It has been a while since we have been together. I enjoyed our conversation.

Chris came over, also. Chris bartends at Kelley’s. He was King of Fantasy Fest a couple of years ago. A real nice guy! He asked about Lisa and the grandkids. Chris and Lisa are good friednds.

Bob and Chris left to go over to Square One to see Patrick. Patrick bartends at Square One. A good guy also! And a good friend of Lisa’s!

Patrick’s partner of 20 years Les had a stroke last year. Patrick is doing a bang up job of caring for Les.

I have lived long enough to see physical tragedy strike many couples, whether straight or gay. A few times I have seen the wife not do the right thing. Either poor care or walk away. I have never seen that in the gay community.

Erica was bartending. Made the evening even better! A lovely late 20s creature!

Oh, and I did get my wings! Absolutely the best anywhere! Big, juicy and succulent!

When I was at Sloppy Joe’s a couple of nights ago, I noticed a sign sealed into the table top. It portrayed a Sloppy Joe’s Restaurant. The year was 1880. The place Habana, Cuba. Note the b and not the v. I write it as it was written!

It leads me to think the name Sloppy Joe’s originated with the Havana operation. Key West’s Sloppy Joe’s opened sometime in the 1920s or 1930s. Historical lore has it that Ernest Hemingway helped carry the furniture from the old Sloppy’s to its new location on Duval.

Animals get well taken care of in Key West. Very well!

A big sea turtle was found on the island sick on January 19. He/she got an infection from eating garbage. Some turtle group took the turtle in and cared for it.

They named the turtle Obama. In honor of President Obama who was to be inaugerated the day after the turtle was found.

Obama is being released back to the ocean tomorrow on the 4th of July. An appropriate day for a turtle with the name Obama! The event will take place at Higg’s Beach. It will be a big deal!

A British warship is docked in Key West. The HMS Iron Duke. It will be here for 4 months while deployed in the Caribbean.

Turns out certain of the crew members are rugby players. So a match has been arranged with the Key West Rugby Club. I did not even know Key West had a rugby team, let alone that anyone here knew how to play rugby! The game is at 6:30 tonight on Stock Island. I am going to try to make it. I have never seen a rugby match.

Wow, am I long winded this morning! Sorry!

However, there is one more item I want to comment on.

California! The State is so broke it started issuing IOUs yesterday instead of money/checks to pay some of its bills. A couple of hundred million dollars worth. To vendors. For tax refunds. A real wow!

I wish I could issue IOUs to pay my bills!

Enjoy the holiday!

Raining last night when I went out on the town.

Needed to wear my slicker.

First stop was the Chart Room. Just me, the bartender and a tourist. The rain must have kept every one else away.

The tourist once lived here in Key West. He now hails from Cortland, NY. Cortland is the home of the Cortland Glass Works!

Cortland is about 100 miles to the south west of Utica. I drove there about 40 years ago to attend a lawyers’ conference. It was at that time I got to visit the Cortland Glass Works.

What an experience! Truly interesting! I had never seen glass blown before. It takes talent!

If you ever have the opportunity to see glass blowing, do it! You will be impressed! The experience will stay with you forever!

Then I did something I have not done in over a year. I went to Sloppy Joe’s!

I generally avoid the toursit end of Key West. I don’t know what motivated me last night, but off I went. And I am glad I did!

I had a great time! The singers were raunchy! Knock the hell out of politicians! The crowd happy! Raising hell!

I ordered Sloppy Fries. French fries covered with ground beef, mozzerella and red sauce. A wow! And costs all of $7.50!

A good night! A different night!

It is going to be another great Key West day today! Probably heavy humidity wise. I can feel it already as I sit here looking out the window at the ocean and the lone palm tree. The breeze is blowing the hot air in through the open window.

Enjoy your day!
