RUSSIA-UKRAINE SITUATION REMINISCENT OF RUSSIA-US COLD WAR CONFRONTATION

The Russia-Ukraine face off is remindful of the Russia-U.S. cold war. Began immediately after World War II and ran till the Soviet Union breakup in 1991.

Especially in the 1950’s and 1960’s. War was a constant threat. We felt it and I’m sure the Russian people did also.

The most “face to face” stand off occurred during the Cuban missile crisis in 1962. When U.S. and Russian ships were nose to nose in Caribbean waters. War looked like a sure thing.

Russia blinked at the last minute and turned back. When war was seconds away.

One significant difference between today’s possible war and that between the U.S. and Russia way back when. The war would have involved ground troops, as well as air, naval and missile. Wars were primarily fought with ground troops back then.

Why Putin has amassed 190,000 military is more for show than anything else. A Russia-Ukraine conflict will involve air, missiles and cyber warfare. Cyber warfare will be the big thing.

Russia’s ground troops will go into the Ukraine initially and stay for awhile. However I cannot  understand how 190,000 of them are required.

Note that Putin is personally showing off this weekend. He is participating in nuclear war games exercises in Ukraine waters wearing the full military regalia of the top Russian commander.

The guy is amazing.

An update of the Russia-Ukraine situation at the moment.

Biden warns of imminent war. Like maybe this coming week.

Putin began claiming a withdrawal of a certain number of the 150,000 troops last week. He was lying. He actually increased the number to 190,000.

Putin is playing war similar to World War II and some 40 years thereafter.

The Russian people have been kept in the dark. They first became aware of the “war” problem in the past 36 hours. No free press in Russia.

Putin is telling his people the Ukraine is at fault. That the Ukraine is shooting at Russian soldiers and making life difficult for Ukrainian citizens who support Russia and want to be a part of Russia. Even to the extent of showing blown up buildings in the Ukraine and indications that a school with children was bombed.

The winds of war are dangerous. You never know what will happen. If actual war occurs in the Ukraine, anything, no matter how small, can result in a conflagration that could involve most of Europe. And, perhaps the U.S.

Some Ukraine citizens are asking Russia to arm them. They are referred to as Russian backed rebels.

Some other Ukraine citizens are being represented by Russia as leaving the Ukraine and moving to Russia to escape the coming conflict. Pictures of people entering buses for the trip are on the internet. Could be for real, could be for propaganda purposes and staged.

Ukraine’s President Zelensky is attending a Security Conference in Munich this weekend to rally support from NATO nations. There is fear for Zelinsky’s return trip. Whether he can return safely.

One last point that has nothing to do with the Ukraine problem.

Yesterday, I wrote re the cargo ship carrying new cars to the U.S. that caught fire in mid Atlantic. The crew had to abandon ship. The burning ship continues adrift.

New numbers for the cars assumedly burning on the vessel include over 1,000 Porsches and 189 Bentley’s.

Enjoy your day!

  1. We lost in the war with the Koreans,
We lost in the war with the Vietnamese
We lost in the War with Iraq – twice
We lost in the wars with Afganastan
We won in the war with Granada

What makes ANYONE think we could win in a war with Russia in what is basically their backyard?

Seems like we should attack more unarmed countries

    • Well, China is winning a “war” of sorts without firing one shot at the west. There is more than one way to wage a fight. I think the German agenda in WW2 taught us to NEVER ignore aggression, no matter how insignificant it may seem.

  2. BOB I WAS THERE IN 1983 AFTER WE INVADED> IT WAS A STRATICAL PLACE BECAUSE OF IT”S POSITION> WE WERE BUILDING A NEW AIRPORT THERE>WE BOMBED THE CRAP OUT OF THIS SMALL ISLAND< I DON"T CALL THAT A WAR <BOB WE INVADED WHEN THE ISLAND LOST POWER IT IS A BEAUTIFUL ISLAND

    • Yeah, but the point has nothing to do with you, but call it what you want, that’s the clpsest we’ve come to winning anything like a war in years.

  3. BOB RE:WAR WITH GRENADA> AS ABOVE> I WAS NOT ONLY THERE AFTER YOUR SO CALLED WAR BUT A FEW YEARS LATER I WORKED AT OCEAN RESARCH AND EDUCATION SOCIETY IN GLOUCESTER MA> WE WORKED WITH STUDENTS FROM AMHEARST UNIVERSITY THE KIDS DID SIX MONTHS IN THE CLASROOM AND SIX MONTHS ON THE SHIP> THE STUDY OF HUMPPBACK WHALES.SO I WROTE A PROPOSAL FOR THE EXCHANGE OF SERVICE BETWEEN GRENADA AND ORES> IT WAS GRANTED

  4. I’m not sure about your post, are you saying you and your students were the reason we invaded Granada? I always thought Reagan need a war to divert Americans attention away from a failing economy and other f’d up problems in America while he was president.

  5. BOB THE INVASION IN GRENADA WAS TH SECURE A NEW AIRPORT THERE> CUBA WORKING FOR THE RUSSIANS THEN> I SAID I WAS THERE A_F_T_E_R THE INVASION> PAY ATTENTION

  6. BOB THE INVASION INTO GRENADA HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH ECONOMIC PROBLEMS IN THE UNITED STATES GRENEDA IS IN THE WEST INDIES AND A VERY STRATEGIC POINT MILITARILY FOR US IN THE USA. THAT”S IT, LOU–I”D GO BACK THERE IN A HEARTBEAT

  7. BOB THIS CONVERSATION IS IMPORTANT TO ME > I “VE HAD GOOD RELATIONS AND MEMORIES WITH THE SPICE ISLAND, WE GOT GARRYI HAVE A FRIEND DOWN THERE AN ISLANDER.

  8. BOB THIS CONVERSATION IS IMPORTANT TO ME > I “VE HAD GOOD RELATIONS AND MEMORIES WITH THE SPICE ISLAND, WE GOT GARRYI HAVE A FRIEND DOWN THERE AN ISLANDER. OK LOU AND YOU KNOW WHAT I DON”T WANT TO LAY DOWN WITH YOU>

    • is marcia actually Sandy, or maybe Patrick? I mean can anyone actually be that dumb, or have comprehension issues that bad?

she’s got to be a set up – more of their games!

      • I never found Patrick to be dumb. Perhaps a little WAY out there in his embrace of right wing politics but, that is Patrick. Further, I have no proof he used anything more than one name when posting. Now, Fred, is a whole different topic.

        • Well, i do have (had) proof he used different names, and different IP addys, too. And although I would not place him in the same league as marcia kind of dumb, he had serious comprehension issues, exactly like when Sandy posts. Sure, sometime that is just forcing political agenda, and not necessarily beliefs. Patrick had a PoliSci degree, and he always focused, like Sandy, on the tactical side of the things.

It would be interesting to hear Linda’s opinions on this, she’s a trained psychologist and does forensic profiling. Back in the day shy labeled him a dangerous bully and even warned Lou about engaging him.

      • Sorry Bob your dumb. Sandy is not Marcia. I am Sandy. And you do not even know my sex. You should join nation news as a reporter, you just shot your mouth off with knowledge.

        • Which Sandy – you are as slippery as snot and woldn’t own up to anything Sandy, especially when you aren’t even Sandy.

Mostly because you lie about everything to begin with!

        • Of course you are not, but then maybe your lying like you did about so many other things, including your relationship with Lou and your position at the KW VFW. Why should we believe you know when almost everything you say has been wrong.

No Joe Biden did NOT rape Tara Reade – EVER !

  9. Isn’t Grenada way way south, just off the coast of South America, closer to Venezuela, than the Bahamas are to Florida? How is that VERY strategic to us? That’s like about as far away as England is to Russia, maybe further.

  10. THE WEST INDIES ARE NOT SOUTH OF SOUTH AMERICA>YOU PUT GRENADA IN THE WRONG PLACE> ACTUALLY YOU COULD PUT GRANADA IN SPAIN>. JUST TAKE MY WORD THAT GRENADA/CUBA/ AND RUSSIA WITH THE RIGHT WARFARE COULD____IT WOULDN”T BE NICE

    • Never said so, and NO, I did NOT put Granada in the wrong place. Why would you say that when a simple read of what I actually wrote is right there above what you wrote.

Comprehension ONLY works if you read what was written.

  11. LOOK AT WHERE CUBA IS IN RESPECT TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. CUBA IS 90 MILES FROM KEY WEST. NOW DO YOU THINK THIS SECURITY IS IMPORTANT TO AMERICA

  12. Cuba is not Granada, nor is Cuba the point of the discussion.

The discussion was about Granada, off the coast of Venezuela in South America, a long ways away – as far away as Russia is from say, England.

We won the war with Granada, because we attacked a defenseless country, who could not fight back.

We chose to attack Granada because if we had attacked Cuba, an actual threat, we would likely started a bigger war that we might not have survived.

Again, the last war we won was was by picking on a easy (far away) target, for no good reason, who could not retaliate.

  13. I remember the Cuban missile crisis. My science teacher changed his curriculum from what he had planned to survival during and after being nuked. If those Russian ships didn’t turn around the planet would have been blasted back to the stone age. Putin may be looking at the big picture and thinking there is no better time than now. I hope we get past all this before it can escalate into something very bad. 1960’s paranoia on my part I hope.

    • A little off topic but I have crossed paths with two fellows over the years.
One was serving on a US ship during the missile crisis. He said they carried a payload easily capable of annihilating any threat that may have presented itself.
The other, on base during the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Both had interesting experiences to share.
