A number of significant more modern writers do not believe he wrote all that is attributed to him: Henry James, Sigmund Freud, Helen Keller and Charles Chaplin. Another is Mark Twain . He was a very serious Shakespeare doubter. In his 1909 essay “Is Shakespeare Dead?” he questioned how someone whose life we know so little about could have written of life with knowledge of law, politics, language, and the wider world.
