Identifying as “trans” nowadays, is a lot like the “Goth” thing was a few years ago and the “hippie” thing back in the day”90’s,” except for the extreme (surgery) part, which is apparently fairly rare.
Not everybody is comfortable with trans ID, but they weren’t with longhair back in the day either and I can tell you I was bullied a lot, with hair that was barely over my ears.

Yes, agree, mental illness, or at least mental “abnormality.” Many would suggest it a roll playing fad, with until now almost no criminal problems. Very few trans people actually have the surgery, but that’s all that “chicken little” people want to talk about. Guess that’s just politics or fear, from insecure American men.
