ZIKA, OXITEC AND FDA

The long awaited FDA report concerning Oxitec safety re humans was received yesterday. The FDA said there was no significant impact re Oxitec use as regards an investigative field trial in the Florida Keys.

That means FDA says it is ok to test Oxitec over my little island of Key Haven. Pretty much covered with family homes.

Key Haven residents have opposed the testing. We do not want to be used as guinea pigs for a genetically modified mosquito. The outcry has made the local Mosquito Control Board agree to a vote by Key Haven residents as to whether they want the testing. The vote is in November.

The result is non binding on the Mosquito Control Board. The Board supports the Oxitec testing.

I do not trust the Board.

My sense is that this has become a personal battle for most board members. Their attitude appearing to be they know better than those who elected them.

None of us knows better. However some of us want to be certain we are going to be safe. Remember, DDT was for years considered safe. History repeats itself.

I have a gut feeling that certain Board members will try to engineer a vote by the Board to go ahead and forget the November election.

The Board being bolstered by the recent FDA announcement.

Were you aware? Did you know? Key West was the second largest city in Florida in 1860. Only 44 fewer residents than #1 Pensacola that had 2,876 residents.

I have decided on the subject for this week’s KONK column. Something along the lines…..Mommy, I’m Hungry.  Venezuela’s extreme food shortage.

I have commented briefly on the problem here and on my podcast show. The column will be more detailed. The world should know.

Research today. The column written tomorrow.

Enjoy your day!

  1. Just like ‘they’ claim the present skeeter sprays to be safe. Don’t believe it.

Key West was also the richest per capita city in the country at one time.

  2. You continue to preach fear based in ignorance even in the face of multiple scientific bodies disproving you.

It’s amazing that you prefer the spraying of what the mosquito control folks cleverly term as “adulticides” which are just chemical insecticides with known published health issues by the FDA & EPA over newer safer technologies just because you don’t understand the science behind them.

The bt larvicides are the safest product in use unfortunately they are not as successful in the control of aedis aegypti species and we should be embracing science and newer safer technologies over these “adulticides” that are now required in the face of Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika instead of fueling unfounded fears not based in science of the Oxitec technology.

  3. The arrogance and disdain for your opinion shown by the mosquito board is the same shown for the general population by the corrupt elite running the country, and the FDA is part of the Washington corruption. Seriously, somebody is going to get rich of off this testing and it’s not gonna be us Guinea pigs. Amazing this is happening under Obamas Watch.

I think trained biologists and epidemiologists know a shit load more about it than you or the average voter.

So you think that DDT, Glyphosate and other pesticides and herbicides are safe.

I’ll continue to think differently especially considering recent research results.

    • Why don’t you quote the part where I said I think that DDT, Glyphosate and other pesticides and herbicides are safe? Perhaps b/c I didn’t say that. I said that I think the biologists and epidemiologists at the FDA, CDC, FLMCD and Oxitec know a shit load more about the topic of the blog, which is the GM mosquito project in the Florida Keys. I’m not going to let the guardian of Louis’s blog’s comment section compel me to qualify every comment I make so I can be sure it’s not taken out of context. In the meantime, watch out for chem trails and tighten up the straps on your tin foil hat.

You need to qualify a comment since we are not mind readers and you don’t explain yourself clearly. Loosen the straps on your tin hat and maybe you’ll be able to communicate better.
If you have been paying attention you’ll know I’m in favor of sterilized male mosquitos.
I happen to like chem trails, I used to make some them.
If you really want to be taken seriously you might think about coming out of the closest and use a name like real people do.

  6. The blog is titled Zika, Oxitec and FDA, which was the subject of my comment. This is nonsense. It was crystal clear, you’re just bored. And this whole “end quote” thing. It’s an Internet comment reply. The whole comment, through the magic of coding, is directly above the reply. Almost like the people who make this webpage template understand that a reply to a comment is about the previous comment. Are you on the spectrum? Good god. As for my name, it’s Steve. Or John. Or Will. Just like your name is Patrick. Or any other thing. Regardless, you’ve sucked the fun out of this. Congrats. You’re the king of Louis’s blog’s comment section. Louis, you attract an incredibly dull demographic and, through no fault of your own, have lost an engaged reader. Thank Patrick if that’s his real name.

PS. For someone who seemingly spends half his time “researching” things, you get shit wrong regularly.

    • Actually, your name is Rick. You can call yourself whatever you want, but your writing style and arrogance, and profanity always identify you.
