WEEKEND IN HAVANA

There once were round trip flights from Key West to Havana. Long ago. The last flight was in 1962.

Round trip air service between Key West and Havana began  again February 28. The next flight March 7 is already sold out. The flights will be three times a week and cost between $479 and $525 round trip. Expensive for a 30 minute 90 mile flight. However, a start.

The reestablishment of flights between Key West and Havana represents the door opening a crack. May it open even more!

Did the dermatologist thing yesterday. I have several holes in the head area and a couple on my arm. Nothing significant.

Did final prep work on last night’s blog talk radio show Tuesday Talk with Key West Lou. Except for a brief lament regarding Syracuse, the entire show involved the Ukraine. A tinderbox.

Putin reminds me of Hitler and the Sudetenland the way he is handling Ukraine. Hitler was an untrustworthy bully and so is Putin. We learn from history as history repeats itself. Hopefully, the situation will not result in another Munich.

Military wise, Russia only has one thing going for it. It still has nuclear weapons. Putin might decide he has to use them.

The Russian army consists basically of Russian draftees. Eighty per cent of those drafted never show up for induction. Those that do are only in for one year. Morale is low.

Russia’s army is already engaged in the Caucasus and Far Eastern Siberia. Russia is lacking in man power to conduct a third war.

Most Russian military equipment is out dated. Armored units and air assault helicopters are not up to snuff. Fuel consumption is high. As is the frequency of breakdowns.

A Ukrainian war would disrupt Russia’s sales in oil and gas to other countries. Oil and gas sales amount to 75 per cent of Russia’s income.

The bottom line is Russia is not equipped to go to war over the Ukraine. If not for Putin being off the wall and out of control at the moment, many would say he is bluffing.

Who knows? Who can be certain? Whatever, let there be no Munich resulting in another give away to a ruthless dictator.

I am subdued and calm re Syracuse. It is like a bomb has been dropped on me  and I lay in the middle of the rubble. Syracuse has lost 4 of its last 5 games. 25-0 is yesterday. Today, a horror story!

I did not see last night’s game. My blog talk radio show interfered. Syracuse lost to Georgia Tech 67-62.

I hope Syracuse comes back and I get to watch the team play in the Final Four. That is all I can say. I say it with a shocking calm.

Enjoy you day!

BURNED PANCAKES

As you are aware, I have been on a diet. In 4.5 weeks, I have lost 20 pounds. The diet is Nutrisystem. It obviously works. It should. I am taking in less than 1,000 calories a day.

The food comes prepackaged. One of the items is a mix for pancakes. Total calories 140. I made the pancakes this morning. The mix resulted in four pancakes, each two inches in diameter.

Not much.

I left them in the frying pan on the stove cooking. Returned to my computer which is about five feet from the stove. I work with the doors to the ocean open behind me.

After a while, I started to smell something burning. Who is cooking out at this hour of the morning, I thought. I kept working. The smell became more pronounced. Finally, it dawned on me! The pancakes! Burned to a crisp. Stuck hard to the pan.

A bad start to the day. Food is the most important thing when a person is dieting.

The Key West Lou Legal Hour was yesterday morning. Just me and Krystal. No Jenna. Jenna went back home to Indiana for Christmas. She was supposed to leave Wednesday. The snow storm hit. The storm continued through thursday. Today is the first day she could fly out.

Krystal and I made do. Though the inconvenience was more on her shoulders than mine.

The show went well. I was surprised what interested viewers the most. I thought it would have been the fiscal cliff. Instead, it was Germany from various perspectives.

I discussed four  German related items. The Neo-Nazi party in Greece which is now Greece’s third largest political party, a statue of Hitler recently placed in front of the Warsaw Ghetto, Germany in effect now deporting its elderly to Eastern Europe and Asian nursing and assisted care homes, and a German cabinet minister who insists God is a woman.

After the show, I walked. Since it was warm, I walked inside Home Depot. Comfortably air conditioned.

I would term myself a floor walker at Home Depot. Many think I work there. I am constantly asked questions like where is this or that, what do I need to do a particuar job, etc. Me, who never even owned a screwdriver his whole life!

Home Depot takes care of its property. Sometime in the last 48 hours, the floors were polished. They sparkled.

I wrote next week’s column for KONK Life. Titled Term Limits. The thrust was that it  is not that easy to invoke term limits on our Senators and Congressman. People should be aware. Term limits might not be the solution.

KONK Life hits the streets wednesday. Read the article. It is an eye opener.

Key West weather continues to be excellent. We are blessed!

Enjoy your day!

A NEW DAY! FEEL GREAT!

I am alive and well this morning!

Full of energy and exuberance!

Hit the bed mid afternoon yesterday and stayed there till this morning. Slept off and on into the evening and watched TV. Then slept soundly from 11 to 5.

Yesterday’s blog provided the details of my energy downfall. The blog also included the little I did yesterday till mid afternoon when yesterday’s blog was finally published..

I have told you what I did from 3 on. There is nothing left for me to relate.

However, more is expected from me and I want to provide more. So…..join me in taking a brief walk back in history regarding this day, September 23.

1779. John Paul Jones uttered the memorable words “I have not yet begun to fight.” The time the Revolution. Jones was Captain of the Bonhomme Richard which was engaged in a sea battle with the British HMS Serepis. Jones and the new USA won.

1938. Neville Chamberlain flew to Munich for that fateful meeting with Hitler. When he returned, he flashed the document Hitler had signed for the world to see. At the same time, Chamberlain announced, “Peace in our time!” He got conned.

1942. Auschwitz begins experimental gassing executions. The event is set forth as a reminder. Lest we forget.

1952. Rocky Marciano knocked out Jersey Joe Wolcott in round 13 to become heavy weight champion of the world.

Enjoy your Sunday!
